Pelosi: I Was Told Interrogation Methods Were Lawful The House speaker's statement came after CIA records showed Pelosi was briefed in September 2002 on the interrogation methods and appeared to contradict her claim last month that she was never told that waterboarding or other enhanced interrogation techniques were being used.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi insisted Friday that she was briefed only once about the "enhanced" interrogation techniques being used on terrorism suspects and that she was assured by lawyers with the CIA and the Department of Justice that the methods were legal.

Pelosi issued a statement after CIA records released this week showed that Pelosi was briefed in September 2002 on the interrogation methods. The briefings memo appeared to contradict the speaker's claims that she was never told that waterboarding or other enhanced interrogation methods were being used.

I suspect morality has no boundry lines, neither for the point of capture or the application of the torture. My understanding is that God permates the whole place, and can see it all.

Of course. And He is not going to confuse Himself by questioning the credentials of people who did their duty, perhaps saving thousands of lives, by doing a distasteful job in a way that was both legal and moral.

You might judge them harshly. But I'm confident He won't.

With all due respect, your definition of morality is painfully self-righteous and terminally short-sighted.

Sorry. But it's the truth.

This conversation is officially fruitless and over.

I am a Tibetan Buddhist and I based what I said in post #135 on Buddhist teachings. Killing a man would only benefit his karmic path in very unusual circumstances. In most cases killing someone does them great karmic harm by sending them into the bardo with evil intent in their minds leading to a birth in a lower realm where no chance of enlightenment is possible. Beating him does little or no karmic harm to him at all.

I have no idea where you get your notions of "karmic entanglements" but it is clear that lots of people, Buddhists and Christians, do think the "afterlife" is something far different than a mere change of "lifestyles."

HEY!

Aren’t you guys going to call me to task for the “Kill them all, let God sort it out” approach? After all, I'm all for declaring a real war just to do the only job that could bring a lasting peace with "those guys". Now you see why I think torture is unnecessary?

No more fun? Dang.

They enjoyed the American blood on their hands - that's their whole purpose - and you call that 'innocent'.

You are only half way where I am. I abhorr the torture, and think it to unnecessary and besides the point. We know who the enemy is, and where they dwell. DECLARE a real war, and go kill all of them. Its the penny-anti stuff that gipes my butt.

No, I am all for the “kill them all and let God sort them out” approach to terrorism. And in that mindset I fully approve of the less harsh action of wringing life saving information out of those we capture in any way we can. I’m not going to make false distinctions about which is more or less moral, killing them on the battlefield or roughing them up in their lifetime detention for the purpose of preventing more killing by them.

Well, this has turned into a discussion that could probably be of great benefit to me. Thank you for your patience.

Hmmm. Food for good thought.

I equate this "interrogation detainment" to pussy-footing around with the problem. That is really what irritates me with the whole thing. Maybe my morals have a loose screw, but I do find torture of bound prisoners to be immoral, yet I fully believe that total victory on the battlefield to be fully justified and completely moral. We don't need little parcels of coerced information to wage a real war.

My wife picked my screen moniker because she knows me. ;-D

Screw your sarcasm - use it as 'torture' for your muzzy friends - or maybe that would be too much of an offense for them.

It started (this round anyway) in the sky HERE. Visted any grave sites lately? - been to Ground Zero HERE- the battlefield. Or been too busy watching to make sure the 'innocent' are protected, well fed and rested.

We agree!! That's the way it should be done and not drawn out like this. But the liberal PC gets in our way. All the best.

We do indeed agree!

The torture crap is just plain unnecessary. We already know everything we need to know to get the job done.

I do love a good fight, but not with those who are bound. You did nicely!

The PC crap has just about destroyed the Spirit of this Nation. If it shall be war, then make real more. Kill them all, but be a gentleman, for Pete's sake!

My suspicious mind makes me think that 0bama is trying to cook Pelosi’s goose for some reason I can’t yet perceive.

Dictators don't tolerate competitors even in their own party. Pelosi is a rival power center. She thinks she's hot stuff and has her own agenda and is not sufficiently obsequious for el Caudillo.

We don't need little parcels of coerced information to wage a real war.

That may well be why I have a different view regarding interrogation techniques. I think we can potentially save a lot of lives by gleaning information from detainees. If we did it to every Abdul Six Pack we picked up just for fun I wouldn't support that. But we haven't. We pick on the guys we think have something to tell us. KSM actually bragged that he knew something else was coming. By doing that he created the karma to have us get it out of him IMO. Even if it had been a lie.

I happen to agree with you that we shouldn't be pussy footing around. To blazes with nation building. On that I am right behind you and stand squarely on my own views of compassion to support it. To stop a man from killing, who is doing it out of anger and ignorance, is to prevent him from creating horrible karma for himself. If you have to kill him to stop him it is still a compassionate act.

My wife picked my screen moniker because she knows me. ;-D

LOL I'd hate to see what my screen name would be if someone else picked it.

Nice post!

Your philosophy has a good "feel" to it, assuming conservatives are allowed to do that.

I've truely enjoyed our exchange. I'll keep an eye out for you.

Be careful what you condone. Anything good enough for the CIA is good enough for you local police department

You were doing OK up to this point. Obtuse and pompous, but OK. The inability to distinguish in principle the CIA from your local police reveals the soft underbelly of your case. For whatever reason, you seem unable to recruit sound critical judgment on this subject. Sorry. Thanks for playing though.
