Cheney: Mistake for GOP to 'moderate'
CNN - Political Ticker ^ | 2009-05-07

(CNN) — Former Vice President Dick Cheney is weighing into the heated internal debate over the future of the Republican Party, declaring it would be a mistake for the GOP to "moderate."

"This is about fundamental beliefs and values and ideas … what the role of government should be in our society, and our commitment to the Constitution and constitutional principles," Cheney said in an interview with North Dakota radio host Scott Hennen Thursday, according to a transcript.

"You know, when you add all those things up, the idea that we ought to moderate basically means we ought to fundamentally change our philosophy," Cheney also said. "I for one am not prepared to do that, and I think most of us aren’t. Most Republicans have a pretty good idea of values, and aren’t eager to have someone come along and say, 'Well, the only way you can win is if you start to act more like a Democrat.'"

I wish Cheney could have gotten to GWB on that one.

GWB was quite moderate ... on way too many issues.

Cheney is correct. We lost the last election in part because we had a moderate running for President. I wish that these Republicans who have been advocating a shift to the center would shut up and realize this. A return to conservative principles and abandoning the notion that we can be civil towards the democrats is what will help the Republican party win elections.

Ultimately we will all have to answer to God. “Moderating” so that a Repub can get elected is tantamount to declaring that God is not important IMHO. Good luck to anyone who takes that path.

I have moved away from political party identification. I am an American with Christian values and a strong belief in following the provisions of the Constitution as written, not interpreted by progressives with a belief that it is a “living” document. Nor do I hold with a shifting, relativistic moralism that departs from the values set forth in the only Book that matters to mankind as a whole. The Republican Party abandoned those of us with similar beliefs years ago. Therefore I can’t support it as an organized party.

Cheney doesn’t know anything about anything. Now Megan McCain, I saw her on the morning shows, and she’s a smart one. She has Gravitas. Big Time.

"I think periodically we have to go through one these sessions. It helps clear away some of the underbrush … some of the older folks who’ve been around a long time — like yours truly — need to move on and make room for that young talent that’s coming along," he said.

Cheney’s only 67. Will be 72 during the 2012 election. Darn sure not too old for a strong statesman, his sticky ticker has worked without a glitch for some time, WHY NOT CHENEY-PALIN 2012?
