That is common thought, however goyim is a Biblical word. It simply means nations.
Goy = nation, Goyim = nations
There are dozens of references in the Torah that refer to the Jews not being the same as the [other] nations (Goyim).
So, Jews call non-Jews “nations” or goyim.
I can think of nothing derogatory about it unless there is a non-Jew who does not want to be referred to as being not Jewish.

And the most common translation of “Goyim” is still to “Gentiles”. Probably from the use of the term “nations” to refer to the “other nations”... but just a guess.
