Gov. Deval Patricks free wheels for welfare recipients program is revving up despite the stalled economy, as the keys to donated cars loaded with state-funded insurance, repairs and even AAA membership are handed out to get them to work.
But the program - fueled by a funding boost despite the states fiscal crash - allows those who end up back on welfare to keep the cars anyway.

MA is one place where you don’t need a car to get to work.
Our son has lived there for 7 years with no car and held a full time job. The streets are already clogged up and they have the worst drivers in the world.
As a productive taxpayer paying for all this Marxist fun and games from the talentless, unaccomplished, Ivy League career bureaucrats, my ass hurts.
Aren’t free cars guaranteed under the Constitution? If not no problem, let’s just “grow the Constitution”
The most violent 'eloquent rapists' get a cool Lexus and job on Beacon Hill as enforcers.
Boggles the mind... no wonder they camm them “Massholes”
I wonder about the state’s liability if they provide a car for a known substance abuser who then gets plastered and kills some innocent.
A little more unravelling every day.
Why are you, a productive taxpayer, still residing in Mass?
I understand more and more every day why i hate the state of Massachusetts.
Here you go—a new, untapped market for the cars produced by Obama-owned GM and Chrysler.
They can directly send the newly manufactured(green, of course) vehicles to MA welfare recipients.
/cue algor flaming pic
Having a car is a lot like having a house. People who have the organization, drive and intelligence to scrape together enough money to afford either one are usually capable of taking care of them (with notable excpetions)
But when somebody who is unable or unwilling to do what it takes to earn a car or a house on his own is given one, the inevitable result is that the thing is not cared for or operated properly, with poor results.
There is a place in this world for barriers to entry. The housing market and the end of the driveway are two good ones.
Hey Deval, what good is a car without gas? Know how expensive that is? Pony up so I can cruise around and see my homies.
I’m not.
I’m in MO.
My rear end hurts enough from Zeros unending federal playtoys.
The worst drivers in the United States (accident per mile) are in Rhode Island. Massachusetts is a close second.
It depends on where you live and where you work. I live 25 miles northwest of Boston and work 12 miles north of Boston. My commute is 23 miles and takes 35-60 minutes. If I took public transportation, I'd have to go two miles to the T-Station, take a train into North Station, take another train from North Station to work and walk a mile to work. The cost would be about $20 bucks a day and about two hours each way. No thanks.
Unless you live and work very close to metropolitan Boston, you really do need a car, unless you happen to be live and work near commuter rail stations. (Or can walk to work.)
I’m sorry, I misunderstood.
Tired of taking it here in Colorado as well.

Look under the same article in the Constitution that the Clinton Administration said gives housing project dwellers the RIGHT to have free air conditioners!
Despite this, Massachusetts still has lower taxes and other burdens than New York or New Jersey.
Oh, man. This is one of the questions Hannity asks people in the Thursday “Man On The Street” interviews: “Do you think the government should give people cars to get to their jobs?” It’s tongue-in-cheek, and it’s such a ridiculous concept that even the most ignorant of the people say “No” to this one. But here we go...!
Maybe the Minnesota League of Taxpayers can pool together enough money to have an ad during the Oprah hour that says “Attention all welfare recipients! Did you know that that Welfare benefits are even MORE generous than those of Minnesota? What are you waiting for? Get there fast before you miss out!”
