afterall, they do have a gun, and us ignerunt common folk cant be expected to tell the difference between public SERVANTS and everyday folks...

That's just it... there's not SUPPOSED to be a difference. Law enforcement officers are still civilians. The general civilian is supposed to have all the rights and privileges of any law enforcement official, including the right to arrest someone, if necessary. The United States has forgotten the ... government of the people, by the people, for the people... clause. Even military rights are derived from the rights of citizens.
