With all 27 precincts counted last night, supporters of Republican challenger Frank Fannon IV, a banker at SunTrust Mortgage, were jubilant about breaking the Democratic stranglehold on the council.

Another Republican-backed candidate won a seat on the council. Alicia R. Hughes is active in Republican circles but could not seek the party's formal endorsement because she is employed by the federal government, as a patent examiner. She ran as an independent.

The way things are going, that may well be the high point of the next decade.

Thanks for posting. I lived in Alexandria for 22 years and this is amazing. A good harbinger for the election for Governor in November.

It was reported that multiple ballots even had handwritten “I’m sorry I voted for Obama” apologies on the back.

What happens in Virginia, stays within the family. (JUST KIDDING!)

If we turn things around in a big way in 2010, it will be an exclusively grassroots operation.

These people have all already voted for Obama...why would they have to vote again?

Wow! Alexandria is dense, enemy territory. There’s “hope” for 2010.
