NDIANAPOLIS Indianapolis Motor Speedway has made the reputation of racing greats: A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears, the Unser family.
It's been a testing ground for safety features such as rearview mirrors and seat belts, well before they became commonplace in Americans' everyday lives. It's been a movie set, and the place where Janet Guthrie struck a blow for female athletes by becoming the first woman racer at the Indy 500 in 1977.
And, as of this year, Indy has been part of American driving and racing for a century.

I visited it for the first time two years ago. Really cool, especially the drive around the track.
Too bad. Tony George just killed open wheel racing and it`s now only a shell of what it used to be with NASCAR dominanting.
Can`t bare to look at the less than stellar drivers of no names or over-the-hills coupled with the horrible drone of those sad engines.
There’s nothing like Indianapolis in May.
I agree, he has successfully destroyed it, it is unlikely to recover.
I hitchiked over to the 500 in 1968, when stationed at
Chanute AFB, Rantoul, Il. We snuck in when the gate opened to
a rush of motorcycles and cars, and thanks to a kindly gent-
leman and his grandson, were able to sit at the starting line
for the start. What a spectacle for a couple teenage airmen.
It was the 2nd year for the STP turbine car but, Dan Gurney’s
Eagle won with Bobby Unser at the wheel.
Long time racing fan but never attended a race there. Grew up listening and watching the 500 on radio and TV. Finally visited the track in 2003. That alone was jaw dropping awesome. Hopefully when the now unified indy champ cars are more established I will get a chance to go to a race there.
D.Patrick wouldn`t last 10 seconds in F1. CART drivers were good enough to jump to F1 and F1 drivers jumped to CART.
The ONLY way T.George won the battle of open wheel was not because of the horrible chasis and engines or the 3rg grade level drivers, it was because he owned the anchor track in Indinia. Without it his irl would have lost.
Nothing personal, just the facts. I don`t watch irl, it`s just too inferior.
Sexy car.
Strip out the engine and blox boxes, swap it for a 572 crate engine with a carb and THEN it`s a hot-rod.
I hope to do just that with my 94 impala ss BUT i will never buy a GM product ever again now that the messiah and the uaw owns it.
I used to go to pole day when it would be packed. Now pole day looks like a ghost town.
If the fedgov had stayed out of GM's business, I might've bought one of these - and it would've been the first car from GM to be parked in my driveway since I foolishly traded my '70 Chevelle, all those years ago.
Chevelle is a classic, shame on you :-) Ethenol has been proven to be enviromentally dirtier to make than gas so that gagia pop trend won`t last for long.
Funny,
F1’s only Race in These States is at INDY and with Stock Cars There , well Kinda Makes it Special,
Have a Real Nice Day!
Nope, F1 dropped the track in indiana.
One F1 team most likely has the budget of the entire irl. Look, not even gonna compare F1 to irl, thats just silly.
