Everybody, it seemed, loved Sammy Davis Jr., and he loved them back -- with his camera.
His thousands of photos stayed under wraps until his widow, Altovise Davis, agreed to release them for this book assembled by Burt Boyar, Davis' collaborator on his two memoirs, "Yes, I Can" (1965) and "Why Me" (1989).
"PHOTO BY SAMMY DAVIS, JR." Text by Burt Boyar Regan Books ($49.95)
...the Hollywood scene of the 1950s, the Rat Pack antics of the 1960s, the inspiring presidential race of Robert Kennedy in 1968, the civil rights protests with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and even fleeting glimpses of Richard Nixon, an admirer and friend -- there's something here for most readers to enjoy.

Tonight at 9 pm ET on my radio program, we welcome back Burt Boyar -- Hollywood conservative and biographer of the late great Sammy Davis Jr.
Writer and author Burt Boyar of Los Angeles is one of the quiet conservatives sprinkled among the liberal loons in La La Land. He ran with the Rat Pack, dines with Nancy Reagan, and is currently working on a movie project about Sammy Davis Jr.
He leads an amazing life. He accompanied Nancy Reagan's friend Betsy Bloomingdale to the opening of "Nancy Reagan - A First Lady's Style", a glamorous exhibit at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, followed by a private dinner with First Lady Nancy Reagan.
Burt and I have enjoyed our fascinating chats on the air about his deep friendship with the late Sammy Davis Jr.
Burt wrote "Why Me?" and "Yes I Can" about Sammy Davis Jr. -- biographies, really -- that detail his years with Sammy and the rest of the famed "Rat Pack. Burt produced a gorgeous coffee table book filled with amazing photographs taken by Sammy Davis Jr. (you didn't know SD was an accomplished photographer?)
His book "Yes I Can" is being produced into a movie.
Burt's a delightful gentleman, filled with wonderful anecdotes and insight about Hollywood when it sparkled.
And he's with us this evening. So chill the Champagne. It's going to be that kind of night with a dear friend on The Andrea Shea King Show.
