Not long ago, sports writer Selena Roberts compared the Duke lacrosse players to gang members and career criminals.
She claimed that the players’ unwillingness to confess to or snitch about a rape (that did not happen) was the equivalent of drug dealers and gang members promoting antisnitching campaigns.
When since-disgraced district attorney Mike Nifong whipped up a media posse to rain justice on the drunken, male college students, Roberts jumped on the fastest, most influential horse, using her New York Times column to convict the players and the culture of privilege that created them.
Proven inaccurate, Roberts never wrote a retraction for the columns that contributed to the public lynching of Reade Seligmann, Colin Finnerty and David Evans.

Roberts might be a crazy woman, I don’t know. But if the ‘pitch-tipping’ allegation is true, A-Rod should face the same fate as the players from the Black Sox scandal and Pete Rose. Out for life. No hall of fame, no nothing. Throw his stats out too.
Selena Roberts was one of Mike Nifong’s strongest cheerleaders in the Duke Lacrosse rape hoax. Nothing she says without ironclad proof should be believed. She’s one of the few people that can make ARod seem sympathetic.

Good grief. Is that true? I guess color (or in her case, white guilt) does come before anything, even if it means defending a sociopath like Vick.
What she did to the Duke Players is completely unacceptable. The fact that she's never printed neither a retraction, nor an apology actually says more about the NYT's than it does about her.

Yes. Apparenty, (the allegation is) that in games where the outcome was already decided (a blowout) A-Rod would tip off batters for the other team about what pitch was coming. He did this in order that they might do the same. This helps to pad your stats and also to help get you out of a slump.
The shortstop is in a good position to do this. He will often let the rest of the infield know what pitch is coming so they know how to react.
But A-Rod was doing it for the batter on the other team by using little body language signs. Scraping the dirt with glove for a low pitch/slider for example or leaning the direction of the pitch placement.
His rationalization would have been ‘the game was already over at that point anyway’. But it doesn’t help the pitcher’s ERA too much does it? And Pete Rose always bet on the Reds to win. But it’s still cheating either way.
These are allegations and would be very difficult to prove. But if they’re true...
The fact is, throughout his career, when it really mattered A-Fraud was a failure.
When he was in Texas, he stunk it up the first part of the season, and the Rangers would already be out of the race, by the time eventually he’d get his stats up by the end of the year, he was especially dreadful with runners in scoring position.

Not to nit-pick, but I question the use of the term “underprivileged”
On second thought it is not a nit-pick, but a fundamental motivation in Roberts’ agenda.
Also, he would have probably done that for middle infielders on the other team. Not too much use letting a right-fielder know the pitch because he’d never be in a position to return the favour when you’re up to bat yourself.
And obviously, it wouldn’t have just been A-Rod doing this. It takes two to tango in such a thing. Can’t be tit without someone giving you your tat.
As the joke goes, if A-Rod took steroids, it certainly was never in the month of October.

Well, what I always admired about A-Rod was his consistency.
There are different types of offensive players. Some are rock solid consistent performers you can build the rest of your offense around. Dale Murphy comes to mind. But you put them in the ‘must have a hit’ situation and like as not, they’ll choke. Murphy in particular was really bad about chasing low and away pitches in these situations. I would always prefer to have a guy like Bob Horner up in a situation when there was a man on second and a hit was needed to bring that guy home to win the game.
But yeah, I agree. I’ve never been impressed with Alex in pressure situations. Some guys can ‘make something happen’ some can’t. Some can go out there everyday during the season and give the manager something he can build a succesful year on. But then the manager is left looking for other performers come the play-offs.
I would assume off the top that she is lying. Period. She is a biggoted elitist who will attack anyone on her "Guilty List" (ie. white priveliged males, etc), regardless of unproven fact, 100 % based on inuendo and rumor. She is the scum of the Earth and a despicable human being.
Heard her interviewed on our local radio sports show this morning (WFAN, Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason, 660 AM, NYC). Carton asked her tough questions all around, and as for the Duke LAX case, she said that those boys still acted badly hiring a hooker for their frat house! Carton showed her to be an idealogue and a poor judge of whatever (although based on A-Rod’s answers now, I tend to believe her on this one).
