Actually, if you look closely at the polling, you will see that it clearly shows that those who are leaving off self-identifying as Republicans are now self-identifying as Independents.

I looked a the 3% add-on to Independent and the 3% drop-of in Democrat.

The Republican change was simply not enough to account for the rise in Independent.
