Gay Marriage Advances in Maine, New Hampshire as Conservative Rhetoric Evolves

I noted with satisfaction that Maine's senate passed a gay marriage bill this week. So too did the New Hampshire senate. Whether the two lower chambers will pass the accompanying bills is unclear (New Hampshire's house passed a slightly different version, so they have to address it again), and whether the governors would sign the bills is also not known (Maine's governor used to be opposed but now says he may be open to the experience). As Josh Marshall points out, it may be that we've reached some sort of societal tipping point on this issue—I can only hope so.

Another measure of where we've come on the issue can be found in this post on NRO's The Corner, referring to the Maine legislation:

If the bill is approved and signed by the governor (or passes without his approval) there will almost certainly be a "citizen veto" since Maine law allows voters to gather signatures to have recently passed legislation repealed. This would be the first chance for the people of a New England state to have a direct say on the marriage issue.

So the conservative counter-argument has gone from evoking out-of-control activist judges to—once the Vermont legislature acted on the issue with the governor's cooperation—bemoaning the lack of direct voter involvement. What will they say, I wonder, if Maine voters don't exercise their veto?

This will undoubtedly whip up the conservative base, which is fine because the more energized they are, the more they'll drive the GOP off the right side of the road.

I'm just posting this for a fun look at leftist concerning this issue. This thing is brewing for a backlash. Mr. Schlesinger is already in the ditch and does not yet notice it. We need to be diligent on this issue. This is an attempt to re-define our law around an idea that is simply incorrect. One does not have to be religious to understand the misguided nature of this attempt by sexual activists to foist their incorrect definition of marriage onto this country and of course once they get that defined then how can schools not teach the little chil'ren that two daddies and two mommies are just as good as a Mom and a Dad. Some chools in California already teach that children are gender variant and should be encouraged to cross-dress so help discover their sexual preferences. We are at a tipping point we have won many great battles not to take away anything from Homosexuals, they have excluded themselves by choice, but to say enough is enough. We have tolerated you and your spectacles in the streets, we have had sympathy with you and your plight, but we will not lift you and your behavior up and will not remake society in your image and will not intimidate us into silence.

Oh yeah, because nothing says a GOP victory like acquiescing on homo marriage. ROFL effing idiot.

This entire issue has nothing to do with marriage, just as the “school bullying” wave sweeping the nation has nothing to do with bullying. they are going after your children. Unfortunately the Right has cast this fight in terms of marriage, and thus the Left has succeeded in casting it in terms of equality and civil rights. We have to RE-cast it in terms of CHILDREN.

Everyone who is not conservative should have a compulsory gay marriage and a compulsory abortion.

Then they will all fit in with the Obammunist doctrine.

The rest of us will just sit here out of power and lick our wounds and wonder what on earth has happened to our country. America has become a nation of baby killing homosexuals. Incredible decadence this is, worse than Rome ever was. May God have mercy on our country and on the souls of our citizens.

Gay marriage and homosexual behaviour killed my brother, he died from AIDS. I miss him and loved him very much - he just made the wrong choice and society told him it was an ok and progressive edgy thing to do. Enacting gay marriage laws nationwide will unleash the AIDS disease completely.

“Enacting gay marriage laws nationwide will unleash the AIDS disease completely.”

The left has the nerve to say that having gay marriage will make gays be more monogamous, therefore they won’t spread that disease anymore.
I swear people who fall for their BS are the biggest fools on the planet.

to add to yours...”America has become a nation of baby killing homosexual TOTALITARIANS.”

This will go through all 50 states. And because of that the far left and the gay lobby will see it as a great victory.

It is not. Gay marriage will come to be seen as the gay movement’s ‘bridge too far’.

Dissatisfaction and downright disgust with this cuts across just about any divide you can come up with. Later, when people are looking for some common ground, their personal opposition to gay marriage will facilitate unity.

It will never be any kind of rallying point. Too dangerously anti-PC for that. But even the most rabid, Kool-Aid drinkin’, Obama worshippin’ liberals that I know disagree with gay marriage. And I live and work right in the middle of them.

This is an attempt to re-define our law around an idea that is simply incorrect.

It's a doomed attempt to redefine nature itself by human legislation. Its proponents will only be able to convince themselves they have succeeded when they completely silence all those who refuse to acquiesce in the lie.

If you don't believe me, come to New England and try to open a business that refuses to acknowledge same-sex marriages.
