How a Supreme Court Case Tore the Republican Party in Two
FindLaw ^ | 4/30/09 | Marci A. Hamilton

The Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade -- recognizing a woman's right to choose an abortion with the consultation of her doctor -- has served as a kind of cement, bonding conservatives who are opposed to the decision. The ruling brought together evangelical Christians, Catholics, and Orthodox Jews into a novel political marriage. And in turn, their united power led to a revolution within the Republican Party.

In the course of this revolution, the party was transformed from one identified primarily with fiscal conservatism and libertarian principles, to one primarily identified with the evangelical Christians who rose to their apex of power in the Bush Administration. Now, however, single-minded opposition to the decision appears to be the reason for the decreasing size (and, therefore, power) of the Party....

Sen. Arlen Specter's recent shift from the Republican to the Democratic Party was apparently motivated in part by his wish to avoid a Republican primary. He's been in the Party for decades, and understandably felt betrayed by the fact that more conservative forces were willing to force him to go through a rough primary, rather than allowing him to proceed into the election as the party's consensus candidate. There is much more at issue here than that consideration, however. Top Republicans have been trying to play this as solely a move by Specter, but it is equally a move by the Party itself.

The morning after Specter switched sides, Sen. Olympia Snowe wrote in a New York Times op-ed that the Republican Party is risking permanent minority status by shoving aside those in the party who are moderates like Specter and herself....

Run every RINO out of the party on a rail.

“recognizing a woman's right to choose an abortion with the consultation of her doctor”

There is no “consultation” going on to inform the woman what is happening. Abortionists are against sonograms being used.

Guess the part in the Constitution giving those things not spelled out in it to the states didn’t count.

Penumbras? Sure sign that not all law students were the sharpest knives in the drawer.

“recognizing a woman’s right to choose an abortion with the consultation of her doctor:

“Recognize”, my ass!
It created that “right” out of whole cloth.

She lies.

Arlen Specter has publicly said that he has faced fierce criticism over his support of the bailout bill.

That would contradict the above stated "the party was transformed from one identified primarily with fiscal conservatism and libertarian principles".

He doesn't like being a member of the minority party. We've seen it before where older members of the minority party retire rather than "sit on the sidelines".

“Consultation”??

Give me a break!

Tiller would work just like any Title Loan shop on the corner, only with less paper work, if he could!

Rarely are abortions done by any doctor with any knowledge or history or familiarity with the patient.

Abortion is a sleazy, dirty, awful business.

Primarily because no doctor with any ethics would ever be involved in the abortion trade.

Therefore, the number of abortion doctors convicted of financial fraud, insurance fraud, and countless other crimes is staggering.

It’s time to abandon the abortion debate. Look folks, we have every bit we can handle keeping the wolves off our own kids. You can’t defend children from their own parents that want to kill them - it won’t work. It can’t be done. These people are determined to kill their own children. It’s time to abandon this plank in our platform. Accept abortion as an evil in our time, one in which each individual will have to answer to an almighty God. Draw swords and protect your own children - your responsibility to them is greater.

How much “consultation” goes on when they are talking to 14 year old girls about the decision they are being led to make?

There is no 3 day waiting period.

The Republican party lost its “Libertarian principles” long ago. And the fact that George II is still considered “conservative”, and even part of the “religious right” is just stupifying.

And if the Republican party has to be more like the Democrats to win, then there’s no point in voting Republican. If all the Republican party stands for is so-called “fiscal responsibility”, then it stands for nothing. Besides, what is Republican fiscal responsibility? Whenever Socialist Party A puts forth some new piece of Marxist legislation, some social program that will cost an estimated 100 billion dollars, do the Republicans stand up and vocally decry it? Do they actually call it socialism, anathema to liberty? No, they offer their own version of the same thing, but their plan will “only” cost $75 billion...that’s being “conservative”, you see.

And, let me guess, you get to define the term “RINO”.

It is funny how Democrats are so much less tolerant of opposing views than Republicans, yet never a story about their division.

You are very wrong, on many levels.

I will grant you that a nuclear bomb, in the hands of a terrorist, would pretty much make the abortion issue rather irrelevant.

However, abortion IS a GREAT “litmus test” -— by and large, most candidates that agree with me, on that issue, agree with me on most other issues.

We gain NO VOTES by going squishy on abortion.

IN FACT: THE PROLIFE STAND IS BENEFICIAL TO ANY CANDIDATE in a general election, anywhere!

We want our candidates to get ELECTED!

Therefore, our candidates should be PROLIFE!

So we should take all laws against murder off the books?

Dimwit writer missed the part about breaking ranks with Republicans and helping pass the “Democrat Fantasy Spending Bill of 2009.” For that he deserved to pilloried.

LIFE is spelled out in the Constitution, and is the FIRST enumerated right ever declared in this country. It does not belong to the states.

There are a number of issues that stem from it.

Stem cells and the value of human life.

“You can’t defend children from their own parents that want to kill them - it won’t work.” And what of jihadists who kill their own children with bomb belts? Not just sending their kids out to do their dirty work, there was a woman in Iraq who held her child's hand as she detonated herself killing 80 others.

It's like when some tried to argue that slaves weren't really human. This is just a “glob of tissue”.

And then there is the indoctrination of children that this is “acceptable”, “parents aren't always right”, and “your parents don't need to know your business”.

A woman's body ends at her umbilical cord. Those are other individuals they are sustaining. We understand this and issue warnings against using drugs (even beneficial ones) while pregnant.

Also, as we have already killed off 50 million persons in America, we have cut off a sizeable portion of the next generation of Americans. Politicians demand that we open our borders to continue to see our population rise and low wage jobs filled.

As more people immigrate to the country, specifically for financial reasons, not ideological reasons, we get farther from a support for our Constitution and America as an ideal.

Where is reality??

He is the disloyal SOB who has betrayed others for decades. Why is he owed this seat? And if it was going to be a rough primary, that in itself demonstrates he is no where near a "consensus" candidate.

As far as Snowe is concerned, she and her ilk have orchestrated and presided over the permanent minoritization of the Republican party.

Big tent? Yeah. Every loon out there welcome except for social and fiscal conservatives.
