Mitt Romney spread that lie for months and you know that he must have been under great pressure to quit spreading it but evidently he thought that it was useful to create the lie and inject it into people's consciousness, it was part of a larger strategy and evidence that he has despicable motives and unrestrained (and unknown) personal ambitions.
