Evangelicals are still our most conservative and anti same sex marriage group which is why is the media is always working against Evangelicals.
That was the gist of Senator Olympia Snowe’s guest editorial in the New York Times a couple of days ago. She bemoaned the loss of Arlen Specter to the Dems and said the GOP failed to learn its lesson after Jim Jeffords left the party several years ago. She quoted Reagan as saying the GOP should emphasize the things all Republicans agree on, such as low taxes and less spending.
But the problem is, people who are socially liberal become tax & spend liberals. People who are socially liberal but fiscally conservative could hold their political convention in a phone booth. They're about as important politically as Jews for Jesus. And just as any Jew who is for Jesus eventually becomes a Christian, anyone who is socially liberal eventually becomes fiscally liberal, if they aren't already.
Who were the most socially liberal Republicans in the Senate as of last week (before Specter's switch)? They were Specter, Snowe, and Collins, all three of whom are strongly pro-abortion and pro-homosexuality. And guess what? All three voted for Obama’s stimulus bill. So Senator Snowe lectures us on the need to be more open toward socially liberal Republicans, so that we can all work towards economically conservative goals, but she votes leftist on economic issues.
Incidentally, Jeffords was both a social liberal and a big time tax & spend nanny state liberal. The two go together like hand and glove. Any area where people are so uncaring about their culture that they not only tolerate abortion & homosexuality, but make support for those things a voting priority, will not be filled with rugged individualist type people. It'll be filled with dependent people who want an ever increasing roster of nanny state handouts and socialist goodies.
