NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez may have been using steroids when he was a highly touted high school player and was suspected of using performance-enhancers while playing for the New York Yankees, according to a soon-to-be-released book.

The Daily News reported in Thursday's edition that Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts' upcoming book "A-Rod" offers an unflattering portrait of the MVP slugger as a needy personality who wanted his ego stroked constantly.

Let’s see: so far, we have drug use for human athletes, horses, and presidential biographies (this list is in order of decreasing intelligence).

Impressive, most impressive.

I feel sorry for the horses. Not for the others.

Screw ‘em!

A-Rod has already admitted some steroid use, so this certainly isn’t out of the question. But Selena Roberts was one of the worst of those reporters who tried to lynch the Duke lacrosse players, so unless she has a whole lot of evidence, I’d be wary of believing it.

I can think of little, that is less important than this.

Does he still play? I never take notice of the AL until Series time.

Your take on Selena Roberts is 100% correct. I’m no fan of hers, (her stuff on the Duke case was awful) but with regard to ARod, she was correct in what she wrote earlier on him. He said some nasty stuff about her, and publicly apologized to her at the presser in Tampa in March, when the story came out. She issued a one line statement that she accepted it. At that time, there were many in the NY media who felt that ARod hadn’t told the truth, and the consensus was that if it came out that he had lied...he was toast. I suspect Selena has a drop or two of Sicilian blood in her, in that she likes her vengeance cold..

Agreed

Me thinks she's just trying to drum up some press for her book.

Jay-Z made the cover of Cigar Afficionado this month. Profession prior to music mogul - crack dealer.

He and Obama are tight. That magazine is heading for the lotrium. I complained to someone the other day about Portfolio magazine from Conde Nast. It started out pretty well, and drifted leftward with every issue.

Current status of the magazine? Out of business. CN pulled the plug two days ago.

She's a spoiled elitist bitch who doesent know a damn thing about anything, as far as I'm concerned. The crap whe wrote about the innocent Duke boys ought to have put her in jail.

I always get a kick out Mike Shannon calling the AL the junior league.

I am surprised that the Yankees did not “lock” A-Roid into his statement about only using steroids during his time in Texas. The Yankee players were trotted out in a show of support as A-Rod was giving his story. The humiliation to the Yankee players and the franchise will be enormous if his story is not the truth. They should have told him if your story is not accurate and it comes out that your steroid use is more extensive, you are out of here.

This looks like a water torture with details coming out slowly and proving A-Rod to be a liar as well as a cheat.

Things are going to end badly for the Yankees and A-Rod.

My sympathies lie with with the athletes on this one.

To start with, from the very beginning of their career in high school, they are seen as, and treated with the same respect as performing animals.

The attrition rate is terrible, and those that are not discarded due to serious injury are in bitter competition for the tiny number of professional jobs. And even if they get one of those, the ordinary wages are not spectacular for most, with only the very few A-list getting the big bucks.

The attrition continues to be brutal, both by injury and lower performance, with little tolerance for personal problems. Then slap on that the indignity of proclaiming them “role models”.

Role models of what? Bad career choices? Man’s inhumanity to man? The joy of crippling injuries and meager retirement at a young age?

Yet those few willing to do this are desperate enough to take performance enhancing drugs, just so they can do *better*, put on a *better* show, and push the limits of what might be done.

Dang, that’s tragic. But it’s all they’ve got. They have been shafted already, and their future looks pretty awful, not matter what happens.

So why deprive them, in a fit of moral outrage? What’s one more bad thing added to a mountain of bad things.

Ah, now I get it. Sounds like reason enough to be a drug dealer.

Drug dealing is one thing, but the pathos of the drug users in this case is what I’m offering sympathy for. Like feeling moral outrage at starving children “stealing” from a dumpster.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan and A-fraud hater, I hardly care. Sure, I will definitely rib my Yankee-fan girlfriend about it, but it’s history.

Bunch of times here, mostly when I was 13 or 14.
