Obama Administration to Push For Major Initiative to Fight Global Warming

UNITED NATIONS -- The Obama administration, in a major environmental policy shift, is leaning toward asking 195 nations that ratified the U.N. ozone treaty to enact mandatory reductions in hydrofluorocarbons, according to U.S. officials and documents obtained by The Associated Press.

The Montreal Protocol is widely viewed as one of the most successful environmental treaties because it essentially eliminated the use of chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, blamed for damaging the ozone layer over Antarctica.

Because they do not affect the ozone layer, HFCs broadly replaced CFCs as coolants in everything from refrigerators, air conditioners and fire extinguishers to aerosol sprays, medical devices and semiconductors.

But since the elimination of hydrofluorocarbons the ozone hole over the Antarctica has grown...

Not to worry, I was told by a 19 year old lefty girl that it’s because of climate change. Then when I questioned her logic she called me stupid.

Guess we can always go back to ammonia for refrigeration.

If there is anything I hate more than the liberal fascists it is heat and high humidity.

Keep on pushing us, leftist scumbags. The blowback is going to make Hell look like a summer picnic.

Since when have CFC’s ever been linked to global warming?!?

CFC’s affect UV levels, not warming.

Sigh....... Again, this is what comes from journalists writing about subjects which they have no academic training. People should not expound on things they haven’t a clue about. It just makes them look silly.

Here’s an idea: declare a pandemic, and shut the country down. Result: dramatic decrease in carbon emissions.

They eliminated chlorofluorocarbons and enhanced and enforced the use of hydrofluorocarbons under the Montreal treaty; what is now proposed is that they phase out HFCs the same way CFCs were done.

The notion that we could substitute ammonia, flammable hydrocarbons and CO2 as refrigerant gases is fraught with problems from mobility of units to flammability to the need to closely control condensor temperatures in that order.

CFCs were developed in the mid 1930s as a nearly ideal refrigerant mainly because of its safety value as all the ones just listed are quite dangerous in their operation and during violations of containment.

As far as the Ozone Hole is concerned it waxes and wanes with a regularity similar to the changing of the climate itself.

According to some scientists to whom I spoke in Pasadena at JPL in 1989 we should all be sun-burned by now and suffering from skin cancers.

When the Montreal treaty was signed the price of CFCs skyrocketed and new taxes were added on top of the market price; this is what they hope to repeat.

Apart from the occasional leak which requires evactuation of the immediate area and the fact that ammonia is only functional for stationary applications we do have the capacity to do that; but don’t forget that all forms of nitrogen are next on the list of harmful emissions.

By the time we work our way through the atomic table the only non-pollutant left will be lithium — we’ll need that to keep some semblance of sanity.

The thinned ozone lets in more radiation from the sun thereby warming the surface of the planet...
