EXCLUSIVE: Steele fights back against RNC 'scheme.' Exchange spurs feud
The Washington Times ^ | April 30, 2009 | The Washington Times

The embattled Republican National Committee chairman angrily returned fire in his fight with current and former officers over control of the GOP's purse strings.

Under attack from conservatives since taking office on Jan. 30, Michael S. Steele on Wednesday blasted a group of members pushing for new checks and balances on the chairman's spending powers, accusing them of a power grab "scheme."

"I have just returned from an overseas trip to learn that the five of you have developed a scheme to transfer the RNC chairman's authority to the treasurer and the executive committee," Mr. Steele wrote in an e-mail he sent to Randy Pullen, the RNC's elected treasurer, and Blake Hall, the committee's general counsel, as well as to three former RNC officers.

In the e-mail, obtained by The Washington Times, Mr. Steele argues that he always has embraced the "transparency, competitive bidding and good governance" that Mr. Pullen and the others said their resolution aims to achieve.

Mr. Pullen and four other veteran members have proposed a resolution that imposes new controls on Mr. Steele's power to award contracts and spend money on outside legal and other services. The group needs signatures from RNC members from 16 states to force the resolution to the floor for a vote by the full party committee at the May 20 special meeting.

Since when does a chairman have unfettered disbursal power of an organization? The purse strings should rest with the treasurer and executive committee. The treasurer accepts income, accounts for income and writes the checks as approved by vote of the executive committee. Steel and Obumma are pretty free with other peoples money.

Look, it’s REALLY not an issue of “too much power” in the hands of Mr. Steele.

Some conservatives are getting caught up in that line.

But, Mr. Steele may be right, if there were policies already in place, under his predecessors, then, what is the rationale, and who is making it, and why, (whose interests) in changing the policy.

Did Mr. Steele step on some vendors’ honored toes, and award contracts to new vendors?

Given what many conservatives have thought about RNC operations for some time, why would they not support Steele on changing what has not been working?????

“Take a hike Steele. You were never a conservative. Your past record shows that quite clearly.”

Why are you assuming that those proposing the new policy are “conservative”, compared to Mr. Steele?

It seems that it is not really a matter of “too much” power under the Chairman of the RNC, but that someone does not like the powers that Mr. Steele’s predecessors had to be exercised by Mr. Steele.

I know nothing about the players that tells me that those motivated to propose the new policy are “conservative”, at all.

Steele has given me no reason to have any confidence in him. I will not send a penny to the RNC until there is clear, unapolgetic conservative leadership there.

I do not see that in Steele.

Using the old adage "The enemy of my enemy is my friend", I think it is safe to assume that since Steele is a RINO the people opposing him are conservative.

The RNC has had a history of taking money from the conservative base and using it to fund moderate to liberal people that called themselves Republicans. This needs to stop. As long as this doesn't end up being the fox watching the henhouse, it's fine with me.

some possible insight of the timing of Pullen’s action:

“Then came yesterday’s bombshell announcement by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) that he is switching parties to the Democratic Party. Specter’s decision was prompted, at least in part, by Steele threatening to cut off RNC campaign funds to Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe and Arlen Specter in GOP primaries in retribution for their support of the Obama stimulus bill. Steele doesn’t realize it yet, but he only compounded his problems yesterday when he said of Specter’s leaving, “good riddance.”

So, what’s the association in Arizona, between Randy Pullen and John McPain?????

“The RNC has had a history of taking money from the conservative base and using it to fund moderate to liberal people that called themselves Republicans.”

And, from what I understand Randy Pullen has been on the RNC for years. So, under what assumptions can we make that your point is the cause of Mr. Pullen’s action? None that I know of.
