WASHINGTON - After Barack Obama's first six weeks as president, the American public's attitudes about the two political parties couldn't be more different, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds.
Despite the country's struggling economy and vocal opposition to some of his policies, President Obama's favorability rating is at an all-time high. Two-thirds feel hopeful about his leadership and six in 10 approve of the job he's doing in the White House.
"What is amazing here is how much political capital Obama has spent in the first six weeks," said Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff. "And against that, he stands at the end of this six weeks with as much or more capital in the bank."
By comparison, the Republican Party — which resisted Obama's recently passed stimulus plan and has criticized the spending in his budget — finds its favorability at an all-time low. It also receives most of the blame for the current partisanship in Washington and trails the Democrats by nearly 30 percentage points on the question of which party could best lead the nation out of recession.
But the poll also shows potential dangers for Obama and the Democrats. For instance, there's a sizable gap between the president's personal popularity and the popularity of his policies.

I don’t believe the favorability rating at all. I think it’s a big hoax to think Americans still support Obummer in large numbers. I have a gut feeling they really don’t. Since much of the MSM is liberal this is why I don’t believe the numbers!
Unlike Ev - I do believe it. The American people (and the world) are deluded.
IMO, the GOP should at this point voice opposition, hold together, and allow the Dems to give the country a big honkin dose of liberalism. It's gonna happen anyway at this rate, and by 2010 the inflation will kick in like a big dawg and remind folks why Jimmah Carter was a one-termer.

I don't see how inflation doesn't eventually set in. But, the question becomes, when does it set in. If inflation doesn't start to effect the American consumer before the summer of 2010, it could be a very ugly year (again) for the GOP - especially with the negatives of the Republican party.

This poll was taken Feb. 26th thru March lst. Overpolled dems and at any rate is outdated.

For just the second time in more than five years of daily or weekly tracking, Republicans now lead Democrats in the latest edition of the Generic Congressional Ballot.
On the other hand, the fact that is popular is not surprising due to a number of factors:
1) George Bush II and his miserable performance - particularly towards the end of his first term and consistently throughout his second.
2) The utter failure of the national and state GOP leadership to convincingly support an alternative agenda
3) The fact that most Presidents are given a pass by the American public in the early part of their first term.
4) Obama’s personal presence which conveys determination, situation control and eloquence at a time when the economy is in a shambles.
5) His novelty as the first “minority” President, as well as his youth.
6) LAST, but not least, the liberal media's uniform support of this man and presentation of him as a celebrity akin to the “sainted” John Kennedy and “Camelot”.
My suspicion is that many of the people now praising him will be cursing him in the not too distant future when the impact of his economic and defense policies takes hold.
I think we’ll see a slight stabilization from all of the government spending into late 2009, and then we go from deflation to inflation and a second recession will kick in for 2010. And this one is gonna hurt. In the 1970s, there was a lot of wage inflation - prices went up, but so did your salary. This time around, IMO wage increases will NOT keep pace with inflation, and savings and investments will get hammered as well. It’s really going to be an ugly, Argentinian-style ravaging of the middle class. The battle will be to make sure the American public understands who caused it all. And from this point forward, the Dems will not be able to blame GOP obstructionism.

There is a cult class of obamamaniacs. It is Jim Jones level of blind devotion. It is almost desperate validation of their decision to vote Obama because he is change for changes sake.
If local talk radio shows are any reliable indicator, there is a great deal of buyer’s remorse amongst Obama voters.

You need to make sure you put the correct published date when you post an article. It made this thread highly misleading.
If they don’t support his policies, then they don’t support the guy, and that’s what has come out in this poll.
Popularity is something else.
