JOM (Just One Minute) poster Mustang has a plausible theory on the fly-by over Manhattan yesterday: that it was to aid in the production of a film Red Tail about the Tuskegee Airman called Red Tail. Tom Maguire details it:
This is an interesting theory about yesterdays fly-by of Manhattan - they were putting together some footage which would be useful to George Lucas' upcoming film about the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII, known as the Red Tails.
Well - this will never be admitted. And the red-tailed photo of the trailing fighter may just be a trick of the light. And Manhattan is a long way from Alabama, so why would it make any sense in the movie (where I assume it would be part of some epilogue saluting the proud legacy of the WWII heroes) to have a Red Tail escorting Air Force One? On the other hand, some cinematic post script linking the current office holder with the men who blazed his trail would not exactly be unheard of as a Hollywood ending. And Manhattan has got to be more visually interesting that the backwoods of Alabama. (Apparently there was also a similar strafing scheduled for Washington DC which has been scrapped.)
But even though we all know the White House and Pentagon will deny it, I wonder if some reporter will ask? They just might - NYC is the media capital of the world. And besides, the Buck Stops Elsewhere; Obama is blameless in this.
Oh, well - WH press flack Robert Gibbs will play both outraged and dumb and the questioning will move on.
Seriously, what other "photo op" except an adventure film could this have been for. And if the theory is right, was it worth scaring New Yorkers? How much did we pay for this Obama promotion--because surely the film will end with him flying victoriously in that plane followed by a fighter plane from Alabama?
Update - Tom Suhadolnik writes:
In 2007 the Air Force reactivated the 100th Fighter Squadron (the unit of the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII) and made it part of the Alabama Air National Guard. This unit flies F-16s with bright red tail made famous by the Tuskegee Airmen.
This picture from yesterday's fly-by might be more than a light trick. The aircraft looks remarkably similar to this picture of a 100th Fighter Squadron at their public web page.
I have been unable to obtain a comment from the 187th Fighter Wing which is the parent unit of the 100th Fighter Squadron. Most of the numbers, including those of the Public Affairs Office, are defaulting to voicemail.
Congress jumps to call for hearings over things as inconsequential as the college football bowl system, so where are the cries for investigation?
Why, then, an ALABAMA Air National Guard F-16 (if you believe that that red tail is, indeed, an accurate depiction)?
Why not conduct any picture-taking from a government Gulfstream?
From what base did this F-16 originate? How many aircraft in total were there, anyway?
Is Rahm Emmanuel correct in saying that AF-1 was dispatched at the White House Military Officer's sole direction?
The tail looks photo shopped
They're either training dummies (dead weight) or telemetry/camera pods.
Oh, btw .... the Post made no mention of ANY significance of what appears to be a RED TAIL.
According to the Air Force, these were DC ANG aircraft, but why was at least one painted as an AL ANG aircraft?
Looked like the real deal under the wings. But the outside missiles were orange.
Thanks for the info. I get to see lots of aircraft!

sorry - just noticed your tagline.

Stevie Wonder didn’t eather.
I only wish Obama would remain in a downward trajectory path; for the rest of his days. . .
Fear however; it is America that got thrown here; again; by the absolute worst excuses for Leadership our Country has ever experienced. Sad for us; it is at a time; when the price for such stupidity comes at a unthinkable premium.
That said; what the heck is the real reason for this farce that could have ended in disaster for the panicked citizens?
What about the possibility of heart-attacks. . .or injuries as people fled the scene? What if the plane had dipped a bit too low here?
That they would risk even the outside chances of something going wrong here; is mind-boggling. Surely the possibilities had to have been considered; and then 're-considered' as not worth worrying about.
(Might this have stirred fond memories in the minds of our worst enemies. Well, guess we can check their message boards and cartoons. . .)
Were there 'friends of Obama' on board? If so; WHO?
WhatEVER. . .this pathetic choice says a great deal; no matter what rambling, incoherent rhetoric they offer in their defense.
It surely tells us that when it comes to 9/11; that all who really hate this country; and who believed we 'deserved it' - still think so. Their's was the most heinous message: and just a one more time - 'in your face, New York and America!'
No doubt O was right up there cheering Rev. Wright on when he gloated that 9/11 was America’s chickens coming home to roost.
No thank you to the useful idiots who thought this evil person was going to be good for America.
As for the rest of his cohorts, they knew he would hurt our country, our national security too and were glad have it happen.

Could not agree more; and there is always a silver lining for Obama; the more he 'screws America'; the louder his dumbed-down constituency and as well; his 'peers'. . .cheer.
What a 'win/win' for a loser President. Pathetic. . .
