Our spring break is the first week of March and we had plenty of kids from our high school head down to Mexico. Our oldest is a freshman, an athlete, and has plenty of contact with the upperclassmen with track practice and other sports-related events. He has had some sort of cold since then - runny nose, then stuffy nose, tight chest, LOTS of phlegm, then last weekend ran a fever of 103.5º and didn’t get out of bed for a full day. He has NEVER had a virus like this in his life. I took him to the dr on Sunday, they ran a strep test and a mono test. Strep culture the following day came back positive (mono was neg.) but he doesn’t feel like he has had strep at all. Keep in mind, this is a kid who gets strep at least once a year. The whole house has had some sort of a cold/flu virus since this, but it hit him the hardest.
While we were at the dr, I asked if they were testing patients with flu-like symptoms for Mexican swine flu and her answer was, “Not really.” ??? Her first questions for my son were, “Are any of your friends sick? Girlfriend?” And, “Have any of your friends been on vacation recently?”
