Tim Kelly, Toomey’s spokesman, charged that Specter is making a last-minute appeal to conservatives.

“Conservatives in Pennsylvania have long known that Arlen Specter does a dance in which he’s a liberal for five years of a Senate term and then casts a few conservative votes leading up to a primary,” said Kelly. “This time — after voting for all of the bailouts and the pork-filled stimulus bill — Sen. Specter is dancing the same old dance, but the music isn’t playing.”

Fine. He been fronting for Democrats anyway.

He probably has figured that a big Republican clean up is on the way.

My advice to RINO's is to get out while the getting is good.

Apparently he’s seen the writing on the wall and knows he’ll lose to anyone even marginally more conservative than himself.

I do wonder how much information is passed when a senator loses his seat? He’s got his fingers in a lot of mudpies and might be able to keep some secrets if he can win as a democrat.

I wonder how the RNC feels about this after promising to back him and the rest of the RINOs.

Hatch, Snowe, Collins, McCain, and Graham need to follow suit to make actual what has been long-standing practice. At this point, I don’t give a damn anymore.

In the near future this could be bad. He was the single vote holding the line on card check. If he switches, he could change his mind and the Pubs won’t have the votes to fillibuster. I liked it better when he was feeling the heat from the right (with Toomey running against him) and would cave on some of our issues. Now, he won’t cave on anything. He’s a scumbag and I hope that Toomey whoops him in the general though I’m not sure that will happen.

So, does this mean he knows he can’t beat Toomey in the primary?

Th first point, as others have already pointed out, is he may finally be making official what his true status has been for years - a Liberal in hiding, pretending to be a “moderate” Republican; which he never was.

The second point has nothing to do with the Senate, per se. It has to do with that fact that Toomey is way ahead of him in the polls for the GOP primary for his seat. Sensing defeat, he hopes to do better, FOR HIMSELF, as a Democrat.

The third point is that we can expect a lot of moral blather from him, telling lies, about how “the GOP abandoned him”.

The fourth point IS the senate, and its role in judges, spending & treaties. He’s going to NOW run, in Pennsylvania, as the unashamed Liberal he is, and set a course in the Senate to convince Liberal Pennsylvanian’s of that.

True to what Arlen has always been, he’s putting himself, and no particular principal, first.
