CA: Waste Board not trashed; guv down in dumps (what's $2-3 million for plum&payoff jobs anyway?)

Faced with a choice of saving between $2 million and $3 million a year, or preserving a potential and lucrative post-legislative retirement haven, Democratic lawmakers in both houses rejected bills today that would have abolished the state's Integrated Waste Management Board.

Senate Bill 44, by Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Merced, was torpedoed by the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, while Assembly Bill 1150, by Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R-Roseville, was scuttled by the Assembly Natural Resources Committee. Neither bill received any votes from Democrats.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had sponsored the bills. They would have shifted the board's duties to other state agencies - and wiped out $132,178-a-year sinecures for three former legislators who are on the board - and were appointed by the governor and Legislature.**

"A vote against this is a vote against a more streamlined, more cost-effective and more efficient manner of running government and meeting our environmental goals," the guv said in a news release following the votes.

Nice try, but No cigar..

Kaleefornijaaa is fast becoming a waste-land so maybe we should have a waste board,, but considering some who get appointed, maybe a name change is also in order.. truth in politics being the hot thing these days..

Waste(D) Management sounds more appropriate with the likes of Migden onboard.

no need to cut anything. Just raise the taxes. If anyone complains, call them a racist and say they want to make cuts to education and the children

This is a great example of why government should be as limited as possible.

Because government NEVER shrinks. Like when the promiscuous support any and all things amoral-—because it simply increases their odds of getting laid.

Nice timing, Arnold. This move probably would have been a piece of cake on Day One. It would appear that Arnold is attempting to become the governor he campaigned to be years ago. It’s a tad late.

I’ve seen some of these plum patronage jobs first hand and up close.

They come into the office, dicusss the news of the day around the water cool, gossip abouteach other, read the newspaper, surf the net, then go home after a hard days work.

I can name 3 such poeple in one department alonw, an that was 25% of the work force.

the others were merely pushin paper and filling out useless forms that are never looked at again.

We hve one guy whose job was to print boxes and boxes of reports, then take last months reports to the incinerator. No one ever looked at these reports, and the incenerator doesn’t even hook into the heating system.
