Airlines slump, dollar rises on deadly flu outbreak

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- A deadly swine flu outbreak that originated in Mexico took its toll on airlines and cruise operators across the globe on Monday as traders feared a repeat of the SARS epidemic.

Mexico City's streets were empty Sunday as an estimated 1,614 people in that country contracted the swine flu, killing 103 people.

The Mexican government has closed schools in Mexico City and nearby states, and the U.S. declared a public health emergency.

Twenty Americans have caught the disease as well as six Canadians, and suspected cases were found as far as Israel and New Zealand. So far, all the deaths have been limited to Mexico.

The concern is that the disease reportedly has been transmitted not simply from pig to human, but from human to human.

Killer Flu viruses eventually become less virulent. There hasn't been a death outside Mexico. This virus may be losing steam rather quickly. This may not be "the big one".

It’s a good thing we never built that border fence. You wouldn’t want to stop sick people from coming north would you? What would the world think of us then?

Yesterday morning Canada said confidently that it would be four or five months until the Swine Flu got here, by which time we would have a vaccine made by somebody else (cough...USA...cough...) By evening they were admitting to four cases. This morning it is six cases. That is what they are admitting to.

This is a country that cannot stop the illegal terrorist organization of Tamil Tigers from rioting, 1,000 strong, all night, in front of the American Embassy, closing down University Avenue during rush hour, although every cop for 20 miles around is there. How are they going to stop an epidemic that is mainly spread by the Youre Not The Boss Of Me generation?

What worries me is that Continental Airlines has routes all over Mexico and Houston is a major hub connecting to those places. Surely the virus is already here.

Our government just waves them through anyway. Here is one of about 10 major entry points.
