Two Okaloosa County deputies were shot and killed Saturday afternoon at a gun club near Crestview while attempting to arrest a man on domestic violence charges.
The suspect, Joshua Cartwright, 28, of Fort Walton Beach fled the scene of the shooting and was later killed in a shootout with Walton County deputies in DeFuniak Springs, said Okaloosa County sheriff's spokeswoman Michele Nicholson.
Okaloosa deputies Burt Lopez and Warren "Skip" York were airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital where they were pronounced dead, Nicholson said.
"We did lose two very fine men today," said Okaloosa County Sheriff Edward Spooner. "They were both fine Christian men with families."

God bless them and their families. They were there when we needed them working for us. Rest in peace brave men.
Now, a murderer getting away from a gun club in Florida is not something I would normally expect.
Check the PNJ website photo and see how other cops dealt with the murderer.
I knew something big had to be going on yesterday. Cop cars were FLYING all over the place.
Yes this is a BIG story for this area.
Why aren’t our finest being protected? They deserve as much or more protection as the people they protect and serve.
Buy as many semi-autos as you can ASAP.
“Why arent our finest being protected? They deserve as much or more protection as the people they protect and serve.”
What more protection do you propose?
I have to wonder why they were going into a gun club to arrest him in the first place. Seems like they could have at least waited for him to come outside and catch him by surprise instead of going in there to get him. Unless he was considered a threat to the others in there. I’m not taking the guy’s side or anything, it’s always wrong to shoot cops, I just think that a lot of times the police move in when it would be better to wait.
