My guess during Georgia Round 1, was that the Russians want to hook up a physical land connection between them and Iran. At that point they will announce a mutual defense pact with Iran. An Israeli attack on Iran would be an attack on Russia. Similar to the NATO pact. Israel's only option at that point would be the Samson End game.
