It may be, a colleague notes, a fitting coda to the McCain campaign: He apparently rejected his first choice as a running mate, Joe Lieberman, in part based on a faulty legal opinion.
McCain lawyer and vetter A. B. Culvahouse said last week that West Virginia law could have barred McCain from nominating a Democrat as his running mate in the key state, knocking Lieberman out of the running.

“McCain lawyer and vetter A. B. Culvahouse said last week that West Virginia law could have barred McCain from nominating a Democrat as his running mate in the key state, knocking Lieberman out of the running.”
What? There’s a law against Joe Lieberman switching parties? Is that possible?
I kinda wish McCain had picked Lieberman. The MSM couldn’t have blamed the loss on Palin. They’d probably have said it would have been a landslide without Joe.
Instead of losing by 7%, with old Joe by his side, McCain would have lost by 17%. Matching LBJ`s thumping of Goldwater in `64.
Only reason I voted for that hack was Sarah
There must have been fifty FReepers, at least, that were ready to put money on McNuts picking Lieberman.
and he would have lost 60-40
I like Joe better than John.
Let’s somehow arrange for Joe Lieberman to become a Republican, and John McCain to become a democrat.
Both would make more sense that way.
“Only reason I voted for that hack was Sarah”
Ditto here. But he still managed to throw the election to his fellow Democrats. Until the GOP figures out a way to stop phony Republicans from capturing the nomination, they will continue to decline into obscurity.
Mixed feelings here.
Sarah took a drubbing from the MSM (on behalf of the 0bama campaign, naturally) and would have benefited from having another four years as Governor before emerging on the national stage. In that sense, I would have preferred to see an aging warhorse like Lieberman hitch his wagon to McCain’s Dole-esque campaign
OTOH, sometimes you take the spotlight when it’s offered. Sarah got me more excited (no, not in that way...well, maybe a little, LOL) about politics than any candidate since Ronaldus Magnus. She’s the real deal and has the strengths that can’t be taught - toughness, a clarity of purpose, the gift of a natural communicator. I knew from moment one Sarah was the right choice, and all the media smears just make me that much surer of my stance.
Ditto. BTW, Lieberman made a special guest appearance while I was working the phone banks in October.I held out my hand to him to shake. He looked at me like I’d asked him to scrub a lizard.
McCain needs to just go away.
Well, that will be up to Arizona voters next year.
If you pick anyone else, youre going to lose. But if you pick Palin you may win. ...'- Charlie Black- McCain senior political advisor and K Street lobbyist
The reason Black had to give that "straight talk" to Johnny- McCain and his campaign manager Rick Davis crafted a strategy early on during the primaries going after the left center and independent voters (remember how he "won" the Florida primary?) Remember SIT DOWN and SHUT UP yelled at conservatives by McCain early in the campaign?
McCain paid for that approach in loss of conservative support that FORCED him to choose Palin over Lieberman to gain conservative support back. He got a temporary spike due solely from Palin on the ticket, then he pulled the bailout stunt and actually paid homage to Obama in the closing stretch. In the meantime, his own staff was torpedoing Palin at every turn (and still are). It was like watching the political version of seppuku. And the liberal GOP "leadership" from Bush on down watched and let it happen.
It was a poor campaign devoid of conservative ideas and too scared of its own V. P. nominee to let her speak on her own. ( A huge mistake )
Doddering old fool.
And he should take his chubby little daughter with him.
