WHAT’S A REPUBLICAN? MINNESOTA’S FEUDING FACTIONS EACH HAVE A VISION
St. Paul Pioneer Press (MN) - Monday, September 1, 2008

Minnesota Republicans are, at least in part, an unknown lot.

But if the delegates heading to the Xcel Energy Center for the Republican National Convention reflect their state party, they come from increasingly varied and divisive camps.

Within it, social and economic conservatives spar with one another and with moderates about the party’s direction. Another group wants to mix it up altogether. Old lines from a quarter-century ago are barely recognizable. Some even see themselves as more independent than Republican.

“I think we are only at the very beginning of really significant tensions within these groups,” said Tom Horner , a public relations executive and chief of staff to former Republican U.S. Sen. Dave Durenberger.

“If we don’t open ourselves to new ideas to what is actually happening in the world, I think there’s the potential for Republicans to become increasingly marginalized,” Horner added.

He sees an anti-government group seeking lower taxes dueling a limited-government faction that sees government as a guarantor of equity.

“It believes that what government does do, it ought to do very, very well,” Horner said.

Still another faction, which occasionally includes Gov. Tim Pawlenty, advocates rethinking government completely, Horner said. Its inability to gain much traction chases a lot of people out of the party, he added.
