Reason Magazine: The Untold Story of the Hoot-Smalley Act

"STFU" is only a good debating tactic when the only people who disagree with you already have their mouths taped shut.

I haven't followed what Bachmann has been doing and certainly wish there were more outspoken conservatives than there are, but it's hard to advance your message and political agenda if you make one gaffe after another. Perhaps the one above is just a glaring exception to the rule, another 'Potato(e)' episode in a sea of Biden/Obama gaffes, but real conservatives can play into the hands the left as much as RINOs do. Someone who aims to be the leader of the Republican party needs to do their homework. They do nothing for the cause if they end up as the conservative equivalent of Sheila Jackson Lee.

Bachmann might do well to learn from people like Margaret Thatcher, someone who had to figure out how to take on any member of the House of Commons and clean their clock. Margaret Thatcher didn’t always rely on likeability. And any successful, future conservative president will likely have a legislative agenda that will be frighteningly similar to Thatcher’s, with the way things are going right now. Even if card check doesn’t get rubber stamped by this Congress, the government and the unions are on their way to owning ever larger chunks of the economy.
