Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton was crowned Miss USA on Sunday, but the big story to come out of the normally politics-free telecast was Miss California's comments regarding gay marriage.
When asked by judge Perez Hilton, whether she believed in gay marriage, Miss California, Carrie Prejean, said "We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised
Keith Lewis, who runs the Miss California competition, tells FOXNews.com that he was "saddened" by Prejean's statement.
"As co-director of the Miss California USA, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman," said Lewis in a statement. "I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit. I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone and religious beliefs have no politics in the Miss California family."
Co-director Shanna Moakler told FOXNews.com that she fully supported Lewis' statement.

Miss California's answer sparked a shouting match in the lobby after the show. "It's ugly," said Scott Ihrig, a gay man, who attended the pageant with his partner. "I think it's ridiculous that she got first runner-up. That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience. Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are."
Charmaine Koonce, the mother of Miss New Mexico USA Bianca Matamoros-Koonce, argued back.
"In the Bible it says marriage is between Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!"

She could have said “I voted for Barrack Obama and whatever he says on this or any other subject, I’m standing with him 100 per cent!”
They would not have DARED crown anyone else.
I read through the article, but there was no mention of the question that was asked of the winner. Does anybody know if she was asked the same question as Miss California, and if so, what her answer was?
As co-director of the Miss California USA, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman," said Lewis in a statement. "I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit. What, they asked and then wanted her to lie about her personal beliefs, which ARE spot on BTW? And what does her beliefs have to do with beauty anyway? Bah!
They are trying to demonize her until she comes out with a full apology, explanation and poses on the cover of a gay magazine saying she’s sorry.
They did the same thing to American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson.
This really should be sufficient to turn a homosexual straight.
They suspected what her answer would be, and wanted to smear her and make her too controversial to have any sort of career involving Hollywood in the future?
OMG....that’s just TOO MUCH INFORMATION showin’!!!!
I can’t stand that weirdo.
Good, she stood on her principles
I’ve never understood how a guy can look at someone like that woman walking by and then turn to the hairy butted guy next to him and still feel the same way towards him.
Never understood it, never will.
Well, she has the rest of her obligations for the year as Miss California USA to complete, and she IS the first runner up so she needs to be available. I really hope she goes about her duties with her head held high. So she has at least 11 months before she can take on a ‘real job’.
Me neither, women are beautiful, the Lord might have even over done it (just kidding, God is perfect in all things but you know what I mean)
FLAWLESS
Can we be SO lucky?
Well then God bless you Shannon honey!
Did she ever leave the rich dweeb wiggah?
that would have been an excellent answer
I wish they all could be California girls....
I’m for same sex marriage as long as both girls are really HOT!!!
