No, really. What is it about this woman that drives so many people to write drivel like this column? This could have been written during the campaign. In fact, it pretty much recaps the arguments against Governor Palin that were made during the campaign. I found them unconvincing then, and, with the benefit of the expensive, abusive, intrusive, and ultimately barren opposition research/dirty tricks campaign masquerading as the press coverage of her and her family, I find them even more unconvincing now.

********************

Agreed.

She put her daughter "on display"? What about her other daughters? Her sons? Her parents? Her husband? Were they also "on display"? They are her family and though you may find it difficult to grasp Sarah Palin loves them very much.

You're a Catholic? I'd suggest you start behaving like one.

Very well put.

We have to deal with the consequences of the MSM hit job on her. Until we are able to counter actions like that, I agree with you that she is unelectable.

Unfortunately everyone knows what went on in that household and still do

No, they don't. There are conflicting stories about what "went on". Instead of recognizing that fact, you've simply chosen the story in which you want to believe. That says something about you, it does not say something about Palin.

Again, you are holding Governor Palin to a standard based on what OTHER PEOPLE do. Hypocrisy, thy name is thomas16.

You're a Catholic? I'd suggest you start behaving like one.

Well, I can see Sarah has some real intellectuals following her.

Boil it down to blind ambition, she is a politician, and she is playing her base.

Sarah didn't have a national base...But she sure does now...

I don't know what goes on in the Palin home...But I doubt it's any worse than some of the bizarre things that have gone on in my household...

I don't need a perfect presidential family...I need a patriotic one...And so far, the Palins fit the bill...

Same thing was said about Ronald Reagan. Fact is you can’t win election without your base. Just ask Johnny boy McCain. We need to get back to our principles and quit parroting Rino’s and Democrats. If Sara Palin were unelectable they would not be this hot to discredit her.

Well, look, she’s a twofold threat.

First, to the established Republican order, she represents the kind of threat that Goldwater presented after Nixon lost in 1960. That’s why the Washington G.O.P. hates her. They can’t deny her talent, but they resent her appeal. She’s also a manifestation of the loss of faith with the G.O.P. by the rank and file. SarahPAC’s numbers vs. the RNC’s numbers should be interesting to see.

Second, the Democrats, as the ruling party, are not sure how long the bloom will stay on Obama’s rose. So, they are lashing out in all directions-especially at Palin, whom they see as a long term threat.

Ignore the bleatings of the liberals. What you see is fear.

Best,

Chris

ROTFL, and all this coming from Politico. So good to see they’ve got conservative interests in mind.

Nonsense like this should show just how much Palin terrifies the left. She, just like Reagan doesn’t need the LSM to communicate with the American people. Michael Reagan said contrary to all Republican hopes we’d never see another Reagan, that was until Sarah’s speech at the convention and Michael was blown away along with everyone else.

They will continue to attempt to beat her down over the next 4 years and paint her as unelectable (questionable intellect and so forth and so on). That will work until she begins her campaign and speaks directly to America. At that point the LSM becomes a sideshow as she energizes the base and draws in many women who would otherwise never look at a conservative. They know this is a true conservative with Reagan like communication skills and articles like this so far removed from 2012 prove the point.

I call “Mr.” Mayer out on this.

He was bashing Palin way back in 2007:

(comments section)

Which makes me wonder. Is Mayer gay?

Seems to be the pattern anyway... gay leftists have an almost visceral opposition to Palin, it’s been clear from the get go.

Another winner of a Mayer column from 2007:
(suggesting McCain / Lieberman)

Ad hominem and hypocrisy - the perfect match. You are batting 1000, here.

I’m so glad the Magisterium has put you in charge of what “acting Catholic” means - even when speaking with a non-Catholic such as myself. I’d suggest you focus on your own issues, FRiend.

You know the ones I’m referencing... Like attacking the intelligence of your opponent because your hypocritical self-righteous opinion is identified for what it truly is.

I know Reagan was derided by the press...here once again is the reality. The press of 1980 is not the press of 2008 or 2012. We now have a 24/7 cable news tabloid style press. To believe that they don’t play a part in the election process is not being realistic. Fox is the only “light” in the darkness of cable or MSM news.

We need a conservative candidate, (not McCainesque) who knows how to handle the press and is more than willing and able to do so. I didn’t see that in Palin...in Palin I saw someone who was ambushed by the press. That’s naive, you can’t go into the national political arena and not expect a “gotcha” approach from the media, you can’t be their friend, they are the enemy. But you have to do it with style, and a smile on your face (similar to a Tony Snow approach to press conferences.)

I, personally, don’t believe you get a second go in politics. Once you’ve been besmirched (whether justly or unjustly) you’re a goner (unless your a really crooked Democrat from an all Dem district, LOL.) Think John Edwards will have a second chance? What about Dukakis, did he or Kerry get another go? I don’t even think Hillary has a chance of a run. There were the exceptions in times past, GHWB, for instance, but he had to serve as VP in order to get his second chance. Call me a cynic, I believe I’m a realist.

“Not that I don’t like her, but we have to be realistic about the situation we’re in.”

Some folks here need to wake up and face a few hard, cold, FACTS.

We just came through an election cycle in which a genuine American War hero (Whether you like him or not), with decades of experience and liked by folks on both sides of the aisle, and America’s most popular Governor were painted a boobs and idiots by not only Democrats and Dem media, but by the MAINSTREAM PRESS.

Meanwhile, the inexperienced, TOTALLY UNKNOWN, AND UNVETTED candidate, with a bumbling gaffe machine for a VP, using MILLIONS of dollars in illegal and almost untraceable foriegn cahs, sailed through, and was hailed as a messiah by that very same press, without even so much as a cursory background check.

Our “media” managed to find FOUR of Palin’s college roommates within 48 hours of her announcement, yet to this very day, not a SINGLE one of Obama’s college roommates has EVER been interviewed by that same media.

Comedic impressions IMMEDIATELY started on Palin, painting her as an Idiot, while, to this VERY DAY, those same comedians STILL target Bush, because they a TERRIFIED of what would happen if they dared to make fun of Obama.

We now live in world in which most people get thier “news” from thier cell phone, the 1 minute news brief on the radio on the way to work, or from the DAILY SHOW on Comedy Central.

Despite all of this, we “only” lost by a few percentage points. But sitting on our collective asses whining about it on a message board will accomplish EXACTLY NOTHING. If you want “Conservative Change”, you had better start getting involved in your LOCAL Republican Party, NOW.

The 20 Astro-turfed Duncan Hunter (Mr. LESS than 1%) threads a DAY during the election aside, we only reach a VERY small segment of folks a day.

Fact is you can’t win election without your base.

Good point. But another ‘fact is you can’t win an election without some of the non base’. And you don’t secure them by sniping at their candidate, denigrating their beliefs or telling them to get lost. It takes a group with mixed beliefs and varied goals to come together and support one candidate to win on the national level. JMO.

Gov is a far better, far more inspiring speaker than 0bozo. Really inspires listeners, and seems utterly genuine.

She’s better qualified.

Better grounded.

And doesn’t use teleprompters.
