“...discovered the following items in his checked baggage: a locked handgun box containing a semi-automatic handgun, a fully loaded gun magazine, several boxes of 9 mm and 7.62 mm ammunition, three model rocket engines containing an explosive mixture (model rocket fuel), military pull-type fuses, switches, electronics kit boxes with various components, and a hand grenade fuse assembly with detonator.”

This sounds pretty innocent to me. The pistol was not loaded. But he failed to declare it. Napolitano will try to make this poor sap out to be a probable domestic terrorist and underline the DHS perceived need for close scrutiny of our Soldiers and Marines. This kid needs a good attorney.

I’ll bet he did declare it at the originating flight.

"...military pull-type fuses...and a hand grenade fuse assembly with detonator.

He might be in a lot of trouble with the military, too, depending on where those came from. Marines and soldiers are not allowed to leave ranges with those "military pull-type fuses" (igniters, apparently) or detonators of any kind. But once in a while, out of millions, one ate-up troopie will try it.

“and a hand grenade fuse assembly with detonator.”

“This sounds pretty innocent to me.”

Fuse assembly yes, but shipping a detonator onboard a passenger aircraft is a problem.

The military pull-type fuses could be the type with the M209 cap, which is basically a shotgun primer, probably OK.

The “kit boxes with components” is definitely OK as long as he didn’t have KN-6 switches or sprytrons, but if he did there would be much more hysteria.

I don’t know what the DOT hazmat rules are for model rocket engines on a passenger flight but they could be a problem.

The grenade detonator is a serious problem, they are not firecrackers.
