Chavez gift book No. 2 on Amazon

The English translation of the book Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez gave to President Obama on Saturday has become a sensational seller on the Internet, jumping to No. 2 on Amazon's sales list by noon Sunday, after being No. 54,295 just a day earlier.

"Las Venas Abiertas de America Latina," or "Open Veins of Latin America," by Eduardo Galeano describes centuries of invasions and other attempts to influence Latin American affairs by outside powers, including the United States.

Mr. Chavez handed the Spanish-language version of the book to Mr. Obama after the American president spoke at a Saturday-morning meeting of leaders from the Union of South American Nations, which was taking place on the side of the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad.

"I think it was a nice gesture. It gave me a book. I'm a reader," Mr. Obama said Sunday when asked about it.

On Saturday the White House said Mr. Obama was not likely to read the book since it was in Spanish.

The Spanish version was printed in 1971. The English translation was printed in 1973 and the copyright renewed in 1997 for a 25th-anniversary edition.

“I think it was a nice gesture”.

No normal human bean could possible believe it was a nice gesture.

Sure, why not? Nothing like 40 year old anti-American drivel to get liberals hot to trot.

Wow. Imagine how many books could be sold if Obama voters could read.

Lot of America haters left wing lunatics are buying this hate America book. I wonder how many of them are buying it from the welfare check money that we are sending them each month.

As long as the unions buy ‘em wholesale, this type of trash will always sell well.

Could be that left-wing profs have already gotten the word to their students: the Galeano book is now required reading.

Well, since the book was published in 1971 he can’t very well blame Bush for the alleged US misdeeds it mentions. I guess he could blame Nixon but he was only 2 years into his administration in ‘71 and preoccupied with Vietnam. LBJ? Kennedy? A pair of naughty gringo jingos for sure!

I hope O remembered to tell Chavez “merci beaucoup”.

I’m beginning to think that the past commie loser Obama most resembles is Salvador Allende. Except for the not being able to read Spanish part.

I hope he resembles him to the point of getting booted out of office. Not that I’d want to see him replaced by a military dictator, though having Friedman economic policies instituted here wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.

There exists a leftist parallel universe that we, as conservatives, can’t perceive or understand, apparently.
