University of Florida's president 'convinced' big state budget cuts coming

The options amount to more than $108 million in possible cuts, providing a menu of possibilities for UF to consider when the state budget is completed.

UF President Bernie Machen said he expects to present a final budget to the Board of Trustees for a vote in mid-May.

He said a lesser total amount of cuts is likely, but he's still preparing for deep cuts and not counting on federal stimulus money to prevent layoffs.

"There's going to be big cuts," he said. "I'm pretty convinced of it now."

All state institutions need to cut spending and contain costs as they have had a “free lunch” at the public’s expense for way too many years.

Reality, Congress and Ødumba are making promises they can’t keep, just wait till folks in the projects figure that out, they’ll make great conservative, when they finally free themselves to think on their own as this fella has

Actually, if you look at the banks that failed...and compare against the top 100 universities in the US...we have the same failure of business management. Its delayed maybe for a year later...but these major universities are in the same spiral.

Start with the university president...who typically pulls in almost $1 million, if you count all of the salary, the benefits, the 45 days of leave, the 401K matching, the leased vehicles, the travel budget, the gas card, and the rehab of the president’s house before each new guy moves in. Then count in the personal staff, the free booze and sodas in the office bar, and the free trips to each football or basketball game away from the university.

Then toss in the administration staff. The chief of housing probably makes around $150k salary, with another $50k of benefits tied to their position, a leased car, and a minimum of 45 days of leave.

Then we come to the professor’s. They’ve built up so much tenure, that you can’t fire them, and the senior guys at the top universities easily make $150k or more. Of course, they are often involved in research grants, which help the university defray all of the costs involved. If these guys teach classes, then its a bulk class episode, with 180 people stacked in some auditorium.

Then we come to the sports crowd. The football coach typically makes more than the governor....and could end up various leased vehicles and nicely rented properties in the $40k per year range.

The majority of all these characters get a pension deal with the state...which could wind up being in the $50k or more range, each year. If you chat with your state pension controller....he’ll shake his head at the amount of money that the state has to pay out over the next twenty years. If you think social security has issues...then this is right behind it.

Then you turn around and look at the community college empire in each state...which is vastly different. No major sports costs. No major president cost. No major administrator cost. They can keep their tuition under control and actually serve as the best deal for any kid these days.

Watch for troubles by October with the university crowd. The key issue coming up...those folks who were in the Sanford fund spiral and lost most of their money...were the upper middle-class who would have paid the $15k tuition per year for the nice universities. Their 18-year old kid would have gone this fall to the big-name college. Today? They are likely headed to some local state-level college and they have to be happy about it. The big-name guys are going to wake up in the fall to find diminished numbers.

Simple. Eliminate the social science department. It is just a waste of money anyway. Fire all the marxist proffessors and we will all be better off and save money.

And drastically cut down humanities. You would be surprised to find that many courses in English Literature are dedicated to all kinds of left-wing political agendas. Sometimes you wonder if they are really about literature, or political ideology indoctrination in disguise.

It is sad to see humanities field have become various indoctrination program for left-wing ideology.

Eliminate or force ALL Professional Sports teams to subsidize all collage sports teams. Collage sports are nothing more that “farm” teams for pros anyway.
