A System From Hell
The Nation ^ | April 9, 2009 | Kate Michelman

Posted on 04/18/2009 3:00:57 PM PDT by malkee

It was a crisp and brilliant autumn day last October when the medical and financial crises with which my family had successfully, if barely, coped for seven years became a catastrophe.

..My husband had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2002, a year after our daughter was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident. His balance had deteriorated until he fell two or three times at home last summer. In the face of his diminishing physical condition, a single fall could result in disastrous injury. We scheduled an appointment with his neurologist in Washington.

We pulled up to the main entrance of the hospital after the two-hour drive from our home near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. My husband opened his door, grabbed the roof of the car and began to pull himself out as I walked around to help him. I was too late. In an instant--time slowed enough for me to see the danger but raced ahead too fast for me to reach him--he lost his grip and fell to the concrete, shattering his hip, breaking his femur and causing internal bleeding that kept him in the hospital for months

I’m sorry for what happened to her husband and daughter, and fiscal conservative though I am, I do support government assistance for families dealing with such extreme medical catastrophes. (That’s a far cry from wanting to socialize the whole shebang.)

HOWEVER, this is the same Kate Michelman who called abortion survivor Gianna Jessen (who has cerebral palsy as a result of her ordeal) a “circus freak.” You’d think her own experiences would give her more compassion for a woman with a disability, but apparently only the stories of disabled people related to Kate Michelman should tug at our heartstrings.

She was pursuing her lifelong love of horses as a trainer in upstate New York. One day in May her horse got spooked, reared up and fell over backward on top of her, crushing three of her vertebrae

I see no mention of workman's comp assisting them. I thought NY was a progressive state and surely had great workman's comp,

1. Her daughter had money to RIDE HORSES, but not for health insurance? Her CHOICE baby.

2. Her husband spent MONTHS in the hospital and she’s bitching because she got an $8,000 bill?

GIVE ME A BREAK.

I don’t deny it being karma coming back to bite her. Call it karma or reaping the whirlwind

So much of this article is BS. To start with she says she had 8,000 in bills and that sucked up her savings. Hospitals and doctors cannot make you pay all at once, you can pay whatever you can afford as you go. She didn't have to use what little savings she apparently had up in one shot. Two:)Nationalized medicine would have let her husband die without providing care for him. 3.) The BS about Republicans being for Freedom so they should be for abortions is about as twisted a statement as I have ever read anywhere. Conservatives, not republicans, don't believe in killing off the unborn children of this world. Don't want a child? Two ways to accomplish that without actually killing them, don't have sex OR have sex and make sure you are protected with adequate, meaning more than one method in place at the time of havind sex, means to prevent becoming pregnant.

Any woman, or man, who discards birth control and then blithely elects to kill the baby is beyond contempt and deserves to burn in hell forever.

National health insurance won't keep you alive, in fact it is more likely to abandon you to death then the system we have now.

Why didn’t they lease a wheelchair from a medical supply house, and many problems could have been avoided ? or even get the word out and borrow 1 for that appointment ?

She states her husband’s balance/coordination were severely detriorating.
Were they that impoverished ?

When I was 18, I quit school, (college) and got a job. (I eventually went back and got my degree.) I knew at the time that I was no longer covered by my parent's health insurance, so bought insurance at my own expense through my work.

My brother, who worked construction and was also over 18 did not. He fell and broke his arm while riding his dirt bike and it cost my parents plenty.

This woman's daughter chose to pursue a dangerous hobby, (see Chris Reeve), without health insurance.

If you are going to go without health insurance, it behooves you to stay away from risky sports.

Today he needs nearly round-the-clock professional help at home-- ...

Before my ancestors reached this time in their lives they went up into the highlands. Into the rocky crags of the Spine of the Earth. Into the thin, cold air at the top of the world and sat down.

They sat and waited. And while they waited, their minds played back the lives they had lived. The happy trails their feet had felt through their moccasins. Rain from many summers fell again in their memories. Snows of winters past piled up before their dim eyes. The cries of children born in their hogans rang in their ears as they sat ... and waited. They lived it all again.

And then, when it was time, my ancestors spirits flew from those places of solitude.

Today the Michelman's who squat where my ancestors ran free and lived free and loved their own people now whine in public that there is no money to pay for a comfortable chair and a warm room to sit and wait for the spirit to fly. The Kate Michelman who debauched herself urging others death now wants comfort for the other Michelman while he ... sits ... and waits ... and waits.

It is sad, to sell the sole for copper. Eat your mush, Michelman ... and wait.

Does this woman think the care her husband recieved would’ve been given had we had nationalized healthcare?

She probably does. The evidence from Canada and Great Brittan would suggest that her husband would be dead by now.

Q. Why read The Nation?

A. My Pravda subscription lapsed.

(So everyone knows, I’m a rabid Marxist.)

My thoughts ‘zactly. Her husband and daughter are defenseless and totally dependent on her to sustain their lives and they are now an inconvenience. I’d say kill ‘em Kate./sarc

>>Well her story is a sad one and I feel awful about what happened to her husband and daughter<<

That is a horrible story! I’ll say a prayer for both of them.

But I have to add, Karma sucks.

Someone who has fought so hard for the right of women to kill their own children should go to her supporters for financial support. It will be interesting to see how much sympathy they show for her plight. As for our awful health care system, it’s very easy to complain about how the existing partially private system sucks and use that as an excuse to put government contol over more of it.

She was not required to cover her daughter but did. Given the way the system works today, I am not sure I would do the same thing (I have two young adult daughters). Care for them, absolutely. Assume financial responsibility, probably not.

A presstitute interviewed a famous jockey named Eddie Arcaro. When asked when he was going to get his daughter a horse, Arcaro told the presstitute that he rode for a living, but his daughter would never be found on one of those “iron mouthed, concrete brained” creatures.

Horses injure or kill many. Daughter of the Libtard knew this and took the risk. Her decision, let her take the consequences.

Where does Mama Libtard justify billing others for her daughter’s selfish and thoughtless entry into a high risk job without sufficient insurance to deal with all contingencies?

WHAT MAKES HER STUPIDITY OUR EXPENSE?

Just wonderin’.

The fact that the Kate Michelmans of the world can run around free and do the evil that they have done is a sad indictment of our society.

As for the plight of her family, I don't give a rat's tuchis about it. Their ideology is no doubt identical to hers, so they deserve to suffer. The more the better. I hope she develops cervical cancer, the evil witch.
