Blue Angels will perform for air show crowd
The South Texas Shootout Air Show, featuring the U.S. Navys Blue Angels, will soar above Naval Air Station Corpus Christi on Saturday and Sunday.
The gates open at 9 a.m. and the air show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
About 180,000 people attended the air show two years ago, said Bob Torres, NAS-Corpus Christi spokesman. The air shows site in the Coastal Bend rotates with NAS-Kingsville every other year.
With the economy the way it is, its a great way to spend the weekend with the entire family, Torres said. Its a ton of fun and it gets better each year.
Six Blue Angel jets, featuring the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, are expected to perform at the air show, one of 67 shows they will do this year.
We had a really great turnout the last time we were in Corpus Christi and were expecting that again, said Joseph Reynoso, U.S. Navy Blue Angels spokesman. So get there early and bring some sunscreen.
The Blue Angels, which features their four-jet Diamond and six-jet Delta formations, have performed for more than 427 million spectators since 1946, according to a Blue Angels news release.
Cmdr. Greg McWherter, commanding officer of the squadron, said while the F/A-18 Hornet wont fly at its top speed of just under Mach 2 at the show because of safety reasons, spectators will see it reach speeds of about Mach .94.
We want to put on a perfect show and we are looking forward (to coming) to Corpus Christi, McWherter said. It is a great venue and we want to show what this team can do.
The Blue Angels Lockheed-Martin 130T Hercules named Fat Albert Airlines after the classic Fat Albert cartoon also will be featured in the air show.

This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
Bad news. The EPA just grounded then — too much CO2 emission.
