What did you make of the big protest against the U.S. military and our veterans Wednesday?
It took place in hundreds of American cities; people were waving signs, brandishing tea bags.
Of course, they didn't think they were speaking out against our military and our vets -- they hadn't really thought it through at all. They were under the impression they were condemning federal taxes.
But where do federal tax dollars go? By far the largest chunk -- more than a quarter -- supports our military and takes care of aging vets.
No, no, the protesters will say, that's not what they mean. They just don't like waste -- who does? -- and they want limited government, just as our founding fathers intended.
Did they really? I know reason is useless against righteous anger, but I can't help myself. How accurate is it to say that the founding fathers were for "limited government"?
Well, if you mean they didn't envision an Environmental Protection Agency or NASA, then yes, they were for limited government.
But if you look at what they actually did -- create a federal government where none existed before -- then they were for an enormous expansion of central control.
Their motto was not -- despite the impression left this week -- "No taxation." It was "No taxation without representation." Unless I'm very much mistaken, we had a major election just a few months ago. The people have spoken. I'm not surprised to hear that those who were unhappy the day after the election are still unhappy now.
It is a little surprising, however, to hear them denounce their own nation and seek to withdraw their support from its brave soldiers and honorable vets. That they aren't even aware of what they're advocating only makes it worse.

Talking points from Axelrod and Emmanuel.
how much of that “stimulus” bill had to do with our military? HUH? I can’t hear you....
How do you say the author is a dip$hit politely?
Bingo.
Watch for this to be echoed on all of the Obama Brownshirt Media in the coming days.
Mr. Dipshit.
BARF ALERT!!!
How come, when Bush was in, dissent was the highest form of patriotism and, now that Obama is in, dissenters are scum. I can remember when I was in college, journalism students were often considered over-dramatic and childish - even in their college years they were filled with their own importance. They also were not exactly known for being overly bright - the lowest IQ’s could make it in journalism. That is why hard news gave way to what can only be considered front page to back page editorializing. Why should we be surprised at the end result?
The Steinberg name generally signifies “barf”
I could be getting some VA benefits, but I don’t want them! Keep up the tea parties. I think they’re somewhat of an effeminate approach but far better than nothing. At least they’re raising awareness of a kind that is needed.
Drive on with the tea parties, and keep your private spending down! Become more self-sufficient and be nonpolitical, until you see some truly conservative candidates.
As a former Marine and a Vietnam veteran, I am outraged that this reporter would try to spin the efforts of all
those Americans and veterans this way.
A quarter of the budget goes to the DOD?
I rather doubt that, how much goes to social redistribution?
Throw the bums OUT.
Tet68 USMC. Chu lai RVN. 1966-68.
Just more evidence that you have to be a moron or corrupt to be a democrat anymore...
Just another snob “journalist” having an apoplectic fit over normal Americans speaking out against government silliness.
“But where do federal tax dollars go? By far the largest chunk — more than a quarter — supports our military and takes care of aging vets.”
MORON! All defense spending combined amounts to no more than 20% of the federal budget. Of that fraction, money for soldiers old and young constitutes a smaller fraction yet, given that it also includes weapons, other technology, supplies, and bureaucracy.
By far the largest single chunk of the federal budget is eaten up by Social Security. Welfare programs in general run laps around defense spending.
Message to journalists: “Don’t smoke crack and scribble, the result may be incoherent drivel.”
Actually, I can do without both the Environmental Protection Agency and NASA.
