McCain vetter: Palin nailed interview
POLITICO ^ | Apr 17, 2009 | Andy Barr

John McCain’s lead vice presidential vetter said Friday that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin “impressed” in her interview, knocking the senator’s most important questions “out of the park.”

A.B. Culvahouse, a powerful Washington lawyer and former counsel to President Reagan, told an audience of Republican lawyers that for McCain, selecting a vice president came down to three questions: Why do you want to be vice president? Are you prepared to use nuclear weapons? And the CIA has identified Osama bin Laden, but if you take the shot there will be multiple civilian casualties. Do you take the shot?

“She knocked those questions out of the park,” he said at an event held at the National Press Club by the Republican National Lawyers Association. “We came away impressed.”

The Republican attorney recalled that after the vetting process McCain asked him for his “bottom line” on picking Palin. “John,” Culvahouse said, “high risk, high reward.”

“You shouldn’t have told me that,” McCain responded. “I’ve been a risk taker all my life.”

What, someone with the McCain campaign saying nice things about Sarah Palin on the record? I'm shocked!

Why take a risk, then get nervous and hedge it out?

While McCain wasn’t my choice for the nominee, you play with the hand your are dealt. McCain went “all in” with the Palin pick, but probably got nervous when the interviews didn’t go well (they should have stuck with the two of them together, and not do separate interviews at all); and was offered conflicting advice from his staff. Problem was he started listening to his staff.

Ping!

A rare article on politico that doesn't seem to be overflowing with bias.

McCain surrounds himself with liberals... I’m sure there were more than one Democrat mole in his staff.

The Palin selection will turn out to be John McCain’s future legacy. It will become the second most patriotic moment in McCain’s personal history, regardless of his moral and spiritual “lost in the wilderness” current existence.

I have my theories. Either a miracle has happened and the wolves turned into lambs... or they decided to tacitly built her up for the primaries, so they can attack her in the general, or they are feeling that they are alienating their audience. At some point normal people will tire of anti-Palin vitriol. People are positively interested in her. That’s where the gold is.

High risk, high reward is exactly right. And exactly what we need!

High risk, low reward is what we got instead.

No, the problem was when McCain didn't let Palin be her own person. She was surrounded by party hacks who wanted her to go by the book. McCain should have cut her loose on interviews, and then defended what she said.

Outside of the Democratic Party and the MSM, Sarah Palin’s biggest enemy was Cindy McCain. I think that Cindy was jealous, and could not stand Sarah. You never saw John and Sarah on stage without Cindy. Cindy was not a candidate, she was not always needed.

I have said this before, but I contend that that it was Cindy who directed that they go out and buy her all those clothes.

My theory?

She must have done really, really, well last night at the speech (I haven't seen it, just some clips), she drew a huge crowd, and seems to be cool as a cucumber (again as usual), considering what she has gone through lately.

I thought Rollins would rip her..he is very moderate, so him being nice was especially weird.

As a professional campaign guy, I'll bet he was impressed at her composure, and what a damn good politician she is.

If you haven't seen her speech:

Video

Thread on the Speech:

Palin raps Obama on abortion (and every other issue)

And yes... it was excellent. The best, most emotional, genuine and engaging speech I have heard since long.

In answer to your question about Biden’s vetting process, he wasn’t ask any questions. His only job is being Øbama’s life insurance policy, just as Pelosi Galore’s only legitimate function is being Biden’s life insurance policy. She doesn’t have brains enough to do anything but parrot the party line.
