Richard Phillips, captain of the US container ship the Maersk Alabama that was attacked by pirates off the Somali coast, has arrived back in the US.

His home town of Underhill, Vermont, is preparing to give him a hero's welcome.

After being reunited with his family, Capt Phillips thanked the military for rescuing him, saying there were the real heroes.

During the attack, he offered himself as a prisoner to the pirates in return for them letting his crew go free.

He was rescued after US snipers shot dead three of the pirates that were holding him captive on a lifeboat.

Thank God for our Navy and our Seals! We probably will never know their names but I think they won't care. A great day to be an American!

Pray for our troops who are defending us despite what happens in Washington.

The ship’s crew was flown back. And now the captain.

So who’s going to man the Maersk Alabama?

If the answer is “oh, they’ll fly a new crew out to Mombasa,” then my question is: “why go to the expense? Why couldn’t Phillips and his original crew just keep sailing the ship on its scheduled run?”

I volunteer, as long as I can take my AR or AK and have the US Navy for back-up.

Heck with that!

I want a military GPS device, access to military spy satellite pics in real time, and a direct line to every aircraft carrier and destroyer and sub in the area. I’ll call in an air strike before I pick up a rifle. give me one of those super secret invisible laser pointers to “paint the target” and then turn all hell loose on it. Let the missiles and jets and torpedoes do the fighting.

Bullets are so last millenium.

I agree. But every once in a while a guy finds himself the fan that poop gravitates toward. When that happens, best to have means to defend yourself while screaming for the Cav. I find it amazing that the Navy was on the scene so soon after the latest American ship was attacked. I’m willing to bet that 0bama had nothing to with it.

Yes sir. 3 terrorists on scene. 3 terrorists on target. 3 shots. 3 kills. Priceless! Praise God for our Seals and Navy and all our troops who do the same thing and we never hear a word about it. You are appreciated, if not by Washington, but by those who actually appreciate your service and know what you do.!

I think obama is so terrified of his falling approval and the possibility of being written off as the second version of jimmy carter that he is telling to military to do what they need to do to make sure he DOESN’T come off looking like carter.

Also, the successful french action against the pirates made him look bad. I think that got his fighting blood up a little. I think he’s gonna be a little tougher than he would like to be for awhile now, until this all dies down at least.

SOCOM (Special Operations Command) refers to them as Delta Tangoes (international call sign representing letters D and T) or “Dead Terrorists.”

Yes, and it reminds me of my own daughter's love of her father.

It warms my heart.

Capt. Phillips thanked the military for rescuing him

Unfortunately Captain Phillips will probably be required to testify in court against the surviving pirate. There is no final closure as yet on this incident.
