John McCain's top adviser from the presidential campaign urged fellow Republicans on Friday to warm up to gay rights and warned that the GOP risks becoming the "religious party" with its opposition to same-sex marriage.
Steve Schmidt, in his first political appearance since the election, spoke at the Washington, D.C., convention for the Log Cabin Republicans -- a grassroots group for gay and lesbian Republicans.
He urged Republicans, in the near-term, to endorse civil unions and stop using the Bible as rationale for gay-marriage opposition.
"If you put public policy issues to a religious test, you risk becoming a religious party," he said. "And in a free country a political party cannot be viable in the long-term if it is seen as a sectarian party."

You did what to his dog?
“You did what to his dog?”
It was an accident, I swear. It just ran right out in front of me.
Rick Santorum tried to warn us.... ;-)
“Otherwise, I will assume those cruel epithets are simply emotionally reactions to a difference of opinion to which you lack the maturity and kindness to deal with as an adult and a Christian.”
Cruel epithets? Hardly. Just a calm, clear statement of obvious facts.
Yes, real calm and kind:
“-Youre a fascist
-You are an enemy of the Constitution
-Joe Stalin? Is that you?”
Your debating skills are pathetic and your chances to win over others to your argument by way of these tactics are nil. You are precisely what the Republican party needs less of in 2010
Ah, finally a vindication of the so-called "Know-Nothings" of the 19th century who attempted to keep Papist priests (who, for the same reason, are incapable of creating a society, let alone a civilization) out of the country.
Ultimately, those generational statistics are what make Republican insistence on clinging to the losing side so dangerous. The real conservative issues (taxes and spending) are likely to become collateral damage in a losing battle to maintain government power beyond its proper bounds.
I didn't know Papist priests were engaging in behavior that was unnatural (unless they were engaging in homosexuality, which some of them may have been).
Celibacy is quite unnatural.
When celibates start making the same societal demands as homosexuals, I'll start worrying about the celibate tyranny.
“Yes, real calm and kind:”
I’m not trying to be kind to you. I’m being honest with everyone else *about* you.
-Youre a fascist: Calm, and true.
-You are an enemy of the Constitution: Calm, and true.
-Joe Stalin? Is that you?: Calm, humorous, and entirely justified.
“You are precisely what the Republican party needs less of in 2010”
You have no standing to tell the Republican party anything, as you yourself are neither a Republican nor a conservative.
Now get back to your usual leftist hate site and leave the grownups alone.
“Now get back to your usual leftist hate site and leave the grownups alone.”
That just about sums it up, you aren’t just ignorant, you’re a bit of a jerk as well.
So I will let you go back to your gay marriage crusade and making that front and center in the Republican platform while conservative economic ideals sink into the background.
It will be great when gay marriage is outlawed across the nation at the expense of becoming a truly economically socialist country and having the foreign policy standing of a mouse.
Well done.
“That just about sums it up, you arent just ignorant, youre a bit of a jerk as well.”
Why is it that you people always think you can pass for conservative, that none of those stupid red necks will see through you?
I don’t think anyone is falling for your moronic, “Accept sodomy or lose all influence” crapola. Where are you writing from, a bath-house?
