You have it wrong. So does Gov. Perry (surprise, surprise. The deal was that Texas could split into, I believe, five separate states. The purpose being to increase its “territorial” voice in Congress. As recently as the 1930s, John Nance Garner tried to arrange just that.

No one could agree on which of the 5 new states would get the Alamo.

There was talk in the 70’s of carving a Hispanic state out of Texas but some Hispanic leaders argued that the Anglos practice of birth control and abortion would give Hispanics the majority in only a few years and thus they would have all of Texas.
