Thousands turn out for Boise 'Tea Party' protest of federal spending

A buoyant Boise crowd police estimated at 2,500 people braved drizzle, temperatures in the 40s and the temporary absence of a sound system Wednesday to signal their opposition to a growing government.

“Where’s our bailout?” asked Jocee Vreeland of Nampa, a stay-at-home mom who said she’s now looking for work because her carpenter husband is underemployed. “They give the automobile guys a bailout, but what about the carpenters and the contractors?”

Vreeland said she didn’t really want money from the government, but that businesses should be allowed to fail. “When a private business fails, it fails. They made bad choices, they should go down like the rest of us.”

Rather than the manufactured signs common at many political events, almost all of the hundreds of placards were handmade. They reflected widespread interests but a fundamental agreement that the federal government has grown too big.

The themes included adherence to the U.S. constitution, lower taxation, states’ rights, gun rights, opposition to illegal immigration and the view that both major political parties are failing.

“Republican Party … Democrat Party … Socialist Party … No Difference!” said one sign.

“Destroy the corrupt 2-headed one party ruling political system. Restore our Constitution, bring back our prosperous and just nation,” read another.

“Enforce our laws. Secure our Borders. Build Fences. No illegal immigration. No amnesty,” read a third.

Some signs took aim at President Obama: “Obamanism = Communism” and “Impeach Obama before it’s too late” and “Ask Obama for his birth certificate.”

Some were critical of Congress, including one noting the recent missile test by North Korea: “Hey, Kim Jong-Il: If your gonna’ launch … aim at Congress.”

Great job Boise!! I love this idea for an organizing tool:

Organizer Al Trees urged participants to sign up for Web updates and stay involved. He said teapartyidaho.com would be a clearinghouse for activism.
