Wireless Internet alone isn’t much without news aggregation. That is, you can get the news, but for most people, they have to spend so much time surfing to do so, that hours are burnt up.
The principle is kind of “We surf so you don’t have to”, and it may eventually become a saving grace to newspapers as well.
Twitter Search indicates breaking news as
Trending topics my FRiend. You see plane crashes, natural disasters, computer virus, sporting events, and all the rest reported real time by people directly involved. Twitter's
advanced search includes a handy locality filter that enables you to easily focus on "at the scene" reports while ignoring news from ad libbing "talking head" celebrity authoritarians who make it up as they go.
OTOH Twitter's trending depth comes up a bit short as it lists only the top 10 most popular words/phrases. Too often you see stupid peeing contests between tweeps trying to make their own favorite "hobby horse" topic "king of the hill." And of course human nature ensures endless idle gossip about nothing.
All of the above provides a golden age for analytic journalists willing to admit their own bias. IMHO journalists ought to find
new media infinitely more interesting than churning out homogeneous mostly left of center pablum that currently passes as mainstream news.
