Before this is all over, I expect we’ll have about 999 different versions of what happened.
This one appears to come from yet another anonymous official.
But it does say that: “Obama was briefed on the crisis at least 18 times. But the crisis seems to have crystallized for the administration on Friday, not long after the White House got word that Capt. Phillips had tried to escape from his captors.”
In other words, Obama was micromanaging it, and only gave permission to shoot after it had gone on for days. Otherwise they could have intervened when the Captain jumped overboard the first time.
999 different versions? :)
I hope so ... we may have to do something similar in the future. Let the media run wild!!!! Keep the real details secret.
The pirates were hungry so we tossed some cookies in the water .... when they swam out to get their halal cookies (baked in the pans with the Easter hams), they got blasted. That’s what I’m going with.
If I’ve told you 999 times, Ive told you a million times not to exagerate
“Otherwise they could have intervened when the Captain jumped overboard the first time.”
Agreed. Prob’ly the most accurate interpretation of events. Can’t think of a story more poorly reported, nay, mangled, in writings by media people. Best I can say of the coverage is that it may be a reflection of the convoluted ‘information’ from ‘mulling’ sources at the very pinnacle of the chain of command. In spite of it, though, good job Bainbridge and Seals.
Quite so. Of the many different stories I've read about this incident, there's been that many different versions of what actually happened. I suppose we'll have to wait for the movie to find out what really didn't happen.
I don't trust any of the "facts" yet. All of the reporting has been so fluid... there's just no way to know.
Otherwise they could have intervened when the Captain jumped overboard the first time.

Agree — opinions as to what really happened are all over the place now —
When I heard the news Sunday, after being thrilled that the captain was safe, all I could think of was “What took our side so long???” Then I thought, “Oh yeah, OBAMA!!!”
Why weren't the pirates all dead the moment the Captain jumped overboard? What is it about passing tactical command to the commander on the scene that we keep having a hard time learning? What sort of idiot military advice is O getting?
