U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Monday that three Somali pirates who were killed by the Navy's Seals to end a hostage crisis were "untrained" teenagers.
Addressing an audience at the Marine Corps War College in Quantico, Virginia, Gates said that the slain pirates, aged at between 17 to 19, were heavily armed but inexperienced.
They were shot dead on Sunday at the end of a five-day standoff with the U.S. military after they attacked a U.S.-flagged cargo ship about 400 kilometers away from Somali and held an American captain as hostage.
"As long as you've got this incredible number of poor people and the risks are relatively small, there's really no way in my view to control it unless you get something on land that begins to change the equation for these kids," Gates told students and faculty members.

Good, if they're inexperienced, untrained teenagers they will be easier for our people to kill.
How did the seafaring nations of the world get into this state of mind that seems apologetic for freeing the innocent victims of murderous pirates because they (the pirates) are plying their trade out of the ports of poor 3rd world nations? Does this mean that raiding, robbing, murdering, and kidnapping on the high seas is acceptable if the pirates are poor and young?
Not to me it isn't, and if I was in charge I would bring any pirates our navy captured back to a US port and hang them from a gibbet on the wharf for public viewing as the custom was in 17th and 18th century England.
If anyone who has read my previous FR posts thinks that I am betraying the Biblical principles that I often refer to, read the book of Exodus and see the penalty that God prescribes for thieves and murderers. Hanging is a merciful means of execution compared to stoning.
If someone was holding an AK-47 to my back, and they got shot in the head, I’d be pretty happy. Untrained teenager or not.
It was nice to see such accurate shooting from our men. Here’s to hoping for a future full of dead pirates/jihadis.
It makes a difference to their victims if they’re untrained v. trained ? Or if they’re 16 v 25 ?
