Somali pirates obtained fuel for their hijacked lifeboat and were moving within 35 kilometres of Somalia's shore late Saturday with Phillips on board, ABC news and CNN reported.

Did I miss something in that link? I’m looking at the latest stories for what people reported upthread, that the pirates now have fuel, and I don’t see it anywhere. Maybe someone mixed up the Maersk Alabama coming in to shore with the lifeboat?

"Really? That is so Dick Cheney. Why not?

Well, if you're going to bailout the UAW, I suppose a case could be made to bailout the pirates.

Do we know if any water is getting to the captain? It must be hot in there, I’m most worried about dehydration.

Pirates on the 28-foot lifeboat, believed to be armed with pistols and AK-47 assault rifles, fired yesterday on a small US Navy craft that had approached from the destroyer USS Bainbridge. The gunfire forced the sailors to turn back, and they did not return fire, a US official told CNN.

Phillips’s cargo vessel, the 500-foot Maersk Alabama, was carrying humanitarian aid south toward Kenya when it was attacked by pirates Wednesday. Phillips and the crew thwarted the siege, and, the crew said, the captain gave himself up to avoid bloodshed.

I just saw on the Fox News ‘scroll’ at the bottom of the screen that Obama is not going to be able to keep his promise about the ‘tax cuts’. What else is new?!

It’s becoming unavoidably obvious that somebody is in over their head here; those whose voices were drowned in the caution advanced and silenced by the enamored clamor can take no comfort nor any delight in the certainty of their foreboding.

Vanity has once again raised her foolish head on a fruitless, outstretched neck only to find her ass mired in the muck.

What now, valiant heart and stalwart soul...?

I’m given to understand that those lifeboats can sustain a much larger number of people for something like ten days. Since it’s four pirates and one human being, with thoughtful rationing, they’re probably OK for weeks.
Granted, thoughtful rationing is unlikely, given who’s in charge inside that boat. It’ll probably still be a while before there is are serious hydration issues.

I don't think the Navy knows anything for sure at this point because they haven't spoken to the Skip since his escape attempt.

SOLAS regs require that a lifeboat for that cargo ship carry 3 liters of water for every lifeboat passenger - that puts anywhere between 30 and 50 liters of water on the lifeboat when it was launched.

The lifeboat may also have aboard it a manually operated desalinization pump that could produce several gallons (or more) of water a day. The lifeboat also had about 3 days provisions for each possible passenger - so food probably won't be an issue for a week or longer if they're frugal. They're Somalis - a ritz cracker is a weekend feast.

think the longer this goes on, the better the skipper's chances actually become, so long as the lifeboat is kept at sea and can't reach the shore or another vessel

I disagree. This is post 9-11. the longer this goes the more likely other hostages will be taken elsewhere to support their muslim brothers in somalia against the Great Satan. We become sitting ducks. In fact we have already lost our opportunity to control this situation. The pirates and other isalmic radicals are now in control. Once we start to negotiate with terrorists they have already won a victory. This is like the incident with Iran and the British seamen.

Somalians are not kind to their hostages. If this drags on even for a few more days, the Captain probably will not survive.

Then what will the Great Obama do?

Thanks again for this post. It is the post of the month.
Even if the pirates did not get gas and that fact is Somali BS, this is an excellent explanation of what happened, since TOTUS will not let the seals go near the boat!

Then what will the Great Obama do?

He'll have his best and brightest working on a way to blame the House Republicans or Rush Limbaugh or something similar.

“Obama ordered the Navy Seals not to rescue the captain “

I would hope that is just your speculation and not fact.
