I understand that the Navy destroyer was as much as a mile away from the lifeboat containing the pirates and hostage. If true it should have been closer and could have/should have blown the pirates to bits the moment the brave and resourceful captain distanced himself from it. The likely conclusion is that it was under orders (from guess who) not to fire under any circumstances. As is usually the case, inaction leads to a much more costly and complicated situation.

No, it would have been too embarrassing for Obama if the destroyer got so close that the pirates were able to board it and take control of it.
