Pentagon Official Mum on Pirate Hostage Details
American Forces Press Service ^ | Gerry J. Gilmore

WASHINGTON, April 10, 2009 – A senior Pentagon spokesman today declined to provide details on the ongoing situation involving a U.S. maritime captain being held hostage by pirates in a small boat adrift off the coast of Somalia.

“There will be a point in time where we can be fully forthcoming with what the military role was and our thinking on it, and why we did what we did," Bryan Whitman told reporters. “That time is not right now.”

The paramount concern of all agencies involved is obtaining the safe return of the hostage, Whitman said.

Armed pirates attacked the cargo ship Maersk Alabama about 300 miles off the Somali coast on April 8. The unarmed ship’s 20-member American crew eventually regained control of the vessel, but the captain offered himself as a hostage to forestall violence.

The captain and his four pirate captors continue to share a small boat that’s adrift in open sea. Whitman said there is “no information to suggest the ship’s captain has been physically harmed.”

The Navy is monitoring the situation, Whitman said, noting that at least two vessels, the destroyer USS Bainbridge and the guided-missile frigate USS Halyburton, are now in the vicinity.

“I’m not going to comment on other resources that might join in this effort, beyond the Halyburton and the Bainbridge, at this point,” Whitman said.

But they aren’t quiet about declaring that piracy isn’t terrorism, it’s a “business model”.

I think what they are desperately trying to do is prevent the death of the Captain. If they can secure his freedom, I think we will see a whole new ballgame, but until then it’s going to be very touchy, and rightly I think, the Administration won’t have a lot to say.

Yeah, well I'm doing that here.

The question is whether or not the Navy is actually going to do something about it. But I guess they are waiting for orders from the Messiah.

What happened to my country? Even the French are making us look like surrender monkeys.

The captain is worth more to pirates than the Navy. He’s the only thing keeping them alive.

The Navy is simply waiting for orders. They will do what they are told, when they are told, regardless of the consequences.

What Obama is desperately trying to do is to bury his head in the sand and "HOPE" that everything turns out hunky dory.

It sounds to me as though they have something in train.

Don’t mistake President Creampuff’s timidity for an unwillingness to order that something be done. Cowards are often very good at ordering others into harm’s way, and he might fancy portraying himself a bold leader if he can extract the captain from this situation. I’m holding out hope that however low his motives, he might still inadvertently do the right thing.

"WASHINGTON – The Navy is moving a huge amphibious ship closer to the scene of the pirate hostage standoff off Somalia.

"Defense officials say the USS Boxer will be nearby soon. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss sensitive ship movements."

we had the opportunity when the captain dived into the water.

If we had a sniper trained on each of the 4 pirates, this would have been all over.
I hope I'm wrong, but now, with the Somolis binging in the other tankers, this captain will be going to Somolia with them

Got the following email from an old friend who is a retired USAF Bird Colonel (C-130/C141)

The Captain of the Bainbridge should be court marshalled for
dereliction of duty. Why was there not one or more lookouts with
night vision goggles on watching the life boat. When the civilian
captain dove overboard from the life boat they should have blown the
pirates away. Sorry worthless bastards.

AND MY REPLY:

That’s what you or I would have done. But given the pu**y in the WH and the b***h over at State, I’d be willing to bet that the officers on the scene had orders to NOT fire on the f**king pirates who are, after all, just poor BLACK MUSLIMS trying to make a few bucks.
GOD HELP US.

I predict no action will be taken before Easter. By Monday or Tuesday, Obama will authorize a Navy Seal rescue mission. If the captain doesn’t survive, very quickly there will be stories in the MSM detailing he was an ex cab driver and any other sordid tidbits they can find.

The captain of the freighter had several expectations when he went overboard.
He expected the US navy to have been watching closely and he expected a blast from .50 cal or other weapons to turn his captors into red mist.
Neither happened and I'd like to know why.

Now that there are two ships on site, they should squeeze the life boat between them.

If we would arm our merchant ships with a couple dozen m16s some rpgs and maybe a direct radio to a local AFB to call in an air strike, none of this wouldl ever happen.

By Monday or Tuesday, Obama will authorize a Navy Seal rescue mission.

By Monday or Tuesday the captain and the terrorists will all have died of thirst.

Maybe the Messiah can wave his hand over the Indian Ocean and turn it into drinking water.
