Defense officials say that one of the pirates holding an American captive fired an automatic weapon when the hostage tried to swim to safety.
Defense officials say it's not clear whether the pirate fired at the fleeing hostage, or into the air. The officials spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the sensitive, unfolding operation.

For some one who claims to “know” about CIWS, you have not yet explained how you failed to know about the Block 1B upgrade, its ability to accurately fire at night/inclement weather, capability to tackle surface craft at a 1/2 to 1 mile standoff — which is the situation.
Perhaps it is you, not others, who need to understand the capabilities of the system as a tool which could be used.
