Defense officials say that one of the pirates holding an American captive fired an automatic weapon when the hostage tried to swim to safety.
Defense officials say it's not clear whether the pirate fired at the fleeing hostage, or into the air. The officials spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the sensitive, unfolding operation.

Is Mr. Gates telling us that the Navy ships he sent to the area do not have any special forces teams that can be dropped, with scuba gear, into the water at night, for a surprise attack AGAINST A LIFE-RAFT!?!?!?!?????
Why hadn’t the Navy anticipated that the hostage might make an escape attempt? There should have been standing autorization to fire on the boat at the first opportunity.
I have to believe that indeed they had considered it, and the orders were to stand down.
By my screen name, I figured you would know where I get my info (actually, it’s been ETCM for 7 years now). Don’t believe what you read on some wiki page, or any other internet sites. They pretty much use generic DDG-51 info. Up to about DDG-84, they all have 2 CIWS mounts, then from hulls 85-93 they have 0, 1 or 2 in pretty random order. Beginning with DDG-94 and following, CIWS was not installed at all. There are plenty of pictures of Bainbridge in the public domain, so you can look for your self if you like.
Being you are a civilian and are not expected to know this, I won’t stoop to insulting you.
Eeeeeewwwwwwwww too gross to see. Eyes are bleeding.
Well, if bambi wants the Navy to go easy on the trash, why not shoot them with tranks, grab the captain, and boogie?
Does not take a seal team after the second head shot they will give up.
The captain and the pirates are in the type of lifeboat that was explained this morning on CNN. Here’s the video

What’s up Gunsmoke? Congrats on retirement! I’ll be joining you soon. Ya might look closer at Bainbridge when she returns from deployment ;-)
Why don’t the ships passing through this area remove the pilot ladders?
regardless, the pirates on that boat ARE vulnerable to a well-planned navy special ops attack that begins with a nite-time under water operation
“I just retired form the Navy “
Really? Great.
See your FR mail.
It is posted on the Navies sites as having one but does not.
So apologies accepted BOYS. That includes for your remark on “check then post”. You both need to grow up and learn that all you see on the ‘net is not accurate. It does not make you look smart when you rely on inaccurate info.
To my recent knowledge there was NO CIWS on the DDG96. I know (well) an FCO of one of the latter DDG’s (who was on a recent tour IN THAT AREA OF OPERATIONS)
We discussed the CIWS before the tour. There was NONE on the ship the ship he was on (I won't say which but between DDG95 and DDG 98).
Humbled BOYS? Take your own advice and CAREF8LLY research before you act knowledgeable. You are the ones who looked like A$$eS here!
Grow up smart guys, FR is for adults who actually know what they are talking about. Really know... like who have been to the actual ships and SEEN if it is there... or NOT
Thats nailin’ them to the yardarm chief!
Check your FR mail.
Yeah, and flogged too.
So whats the latest skinny? are we rigged for silent running on the boards? last I heard that lifepod was trying to make the coast, I guess they figured out how to keep the diesel running?
