Economy leaves millions of drivers uninsured
Insurance industry study warns that 1 in 6 won’t be covered by end of year
"When you see a multi-car collision on the freeway ... if there’s more than three or four cars there, at least one of them is likely to be uninsured," says Karl Newman, president of the Northwest Insurance Council.
Insurance regulators and safety activists are alarmed at what they describe as a stunning rise in the number of drivers who are cutting back or even dropping their auto insurance to save money during the recession.
“It’s been a shock,” said Chris Pringle, owner of All American Insurance Agency in Little Rock, Ark., who said up to 20 percent of his clients had dropped their policies or missed payments in recent months. “I thought we were somewhat in a recession-proof business, because (auto insurance is) required for everyone to have.”
Karl Newman, president of the Northwest Insurance Council, a trade association based in Seattle, warned that “we may be looking at record numbers of uninsured motorists across the nation.”

Drive without insurance, go to jail. Period.
If it is in Ohio the accident automatically becomes the fault of the uninsured. You are required to carry atleast collision insurance here.

Beside, forcing customer into insurance companies make them, like any welfare scheme, lazy, non-innovative, high costs. Their real customer is not you, it is the government and the service, bribing and support of government.
As it stands now, they don’t need you. You HAVE to buy their product. They need the government. The government is their customer, the decider of what and how much. So, this you support.

Don’t know the exact procedure in other states, but you must show your insurance coverage in Nevada before you can get a driver’s license and register a vehicle.
If you drop the insurance for any reason- even late payment- the insurance company is required to inform the state DMV immediately.
Don’t exactly know the process from that point, but they are quite serious about insurance here in Nevada.
One person I know bought her insurance ‘on line’ and paid thru her credit card. She got a notice from the state that she owned $250 in a fine for not having insurance.
She was such a flake that she couldn’t find the dredit card statement, and because she bought “on line’ she had no agent to discuss anything with.
It was hard to feel too sorry for her when she was too lazy to look thru boxes of stuff to find her payment on her credit card, and she refused to go to the state insurance commissioners office- 35 miles away in Carson City —to discuss the online issues with the state.
When I moved to Nevada—rural—with a perfect driving record- I was shocked to find that my ‘uninsured motorist” coverage represented more than 38% of my total premium.
I can remember when that coverage was optional, and cost me $1 a month!!!
